Early in May 1999, the Indian Army discovered large scale infilitration by Pakistani soldiers across the LOC in the Indian territory in the desolate Kargil sector.
On 10 August 1999, a Pakistan Navy French-built naval Breguet Atlantic was flying over the Rann of Kutch area and was shot down by two IAF MiG-21 jets killing all 16 aboard.
On 30 May, the Indian Air Force called into operation the Mirage 2000 which was deemed the best aircraft capable of optimum performance under the conditions of high-altitude seen in the zone of conflict.
Most notable were the IAF's Mirage 2000 aircraft, which carried out surgical operations to assist ground troops in securing the strategically crucial Tiger Hill from its Pakistani captors.
A model of this aircraft was showcased as the Legacy 2000 for the first time at the air show in Farnborough in the year 2000.
