Indiana University Northwest company history timeline

1959

Under various names and in various locations, Indiana University has been serving the needs of higher education in Northwest Indiana ever since, with our first building being founded on our current location in 1959.

The first building in the new campus, the Gary Center building, is dedicated in 1959.

1961

The building became known informally as the “Gary Main”. Two years later in 1961, Theater Northwest is founded.

(1961) John C. Buhner named Chancellor.

1963

Recognizing the growth of such centers and the increasing demands for higher education throughout the state, Indiana University in 1963 reorganized its various "extension" centers into regional campuses, and the Gary Center and the Calumet Center became the Northwest Campus of Indiana University.

1967

The first commencement was held at the Northwest Campus in June of 1967.

1968

In 1968, the IU Board of Trustees changed the name of the Northwest Campus to IU Northwest.

1969

(1969) George N. Thoma named acting Chancellor.

1970

(1970) Robert McNeill named Chancellor.

1972

In 1972, the Northwest Center for Medical Education opened.

1974

(1974) Herman Feldman named acting Chancellor.

1975

(1975) Danilo Orescanin named Chancellor.

1976

(1976) Hawthorn Hall opens.

1980

The Library/Conference building was opened in 1980.

1984

(1984) Peggy Gordon Elliott named Chancellor.

1988

On the academic front, the Women Studies Program started in 1988.

1991

(1991) Marram Hall opens.

1992

(1992) Lloyd A. Rowe named acting Chancellor.

1993

(1993) Hilda Richards named Chancellor.

1999

(1999) Bruce W. Bergland named Chancellor.

2000

(2000) Savannah Center opens.

2004

(2004) Dunes Medical/Professional Building opens.

2007

In 2007, the new College of Health and Human Services was founded.

2008

While the campus continued to grow, a disaster struck the campus in 2008.

(2008) Campus is flooded with water overflowing from the Little Calumet River.

2010

(2010) Chancellor Bruce W. Bergland retires.

2012

(2012) Tamarack Hall is demolished.

2015

(2015) Groundbreaking for new Arts & Sciences Building (to replace Tamarack Hall).

2016

(2016) 50th commencement at the IU Northwest campus.

2017

(2017) New Arts & Sciences Building opens.

2019

(2019) IU Northwest celebrates 60 years of being at current campus.
