Indiana University of Pennsylvania company history timeline
The school opened in 1875.
In 1927 it was made a degree-granting institution and renamed State Teachers College at Indiana.
The college acquired its current name when it was elevated to university status in 1965.
Over the years, the school's name changed as it grew, from Indiana State Teachers College, in 1920, when it was awarded the right to grant degrees; to Indiana State College, in 1959; and finally to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1965. Its first doctoral program was offered in 1969.
The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education was created in 1983.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania: Our Homage and Our Love : Professors Ron Juliette and Dale Landon wrote this pictorial history of IUP in 1991 to celebrate IUP’s commitment to excellence and support of the people of Western Pennsylvania.
The History Department will celebrate its 2020 graduates on Saturday, May 9, at 9:00 a.m. via Zoom.
The IUP Story: Indiana University of Pennsylvania, from Normal School to University, by professor emeritus of history Charles Cashdollar ’65, will be available in fall 2021.
