IUPUI history

IUPUC (Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus) was founded in 1970 to serve the post-secondary education needs of citizens and industry in south central Indiana.

1972: IU School of Public & Environmental Affairs, IU School of Liberal Arts, Purdue School of Science, and Purdue School of Engineering and Technology are established

Renamed the Indiana University School of Physical Education in 1973, it is the oldest continuously operating school of physical education in the country.

With the reorganization of the university in November 1974, the School of Business began operating at two campuses—Bloomington and Indianapolis.

1975: The Engineering and Technology Building is completed and the School of Continuing Studies is established

In 1984, the Indiana General Assembly appropriated $2.5 million for the construction of science and technology labs and a new exterior for the IUPUC building.

The Indiana University Trustees approved a $3.55 million expansion and renovation at IUPUC. The renovation was completed in 1985, resulting in an expansion of more than 60 percent compared to the pre-renovation square footage.

1986: Gerald L. Bepko, Ph.D., is named third chancellor of IUPUI

An additional 11 acres of land was deeded to the Indiana University Board of Trustees by the City of Columbus in 1987.

The name of the campus was changed to Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis in 1992.

After that, enrollment in the School of Business did not include freshmen until 1995, when the Direct Freshman Admission Program began.

In 1997, E. W. Kelley, an undergraduate alumnus of the Indiana University School of Business, donated $23 million to assist the school in its mission to provide the premiere business program in the nation.

1999: IU Cancer Center receives national cancer center research designation

The Godfrey Graduate and Executive Education Center, which houses the MBA, Kelley Direct, graduate accounting, and executive education programs, was completed in 2002.

2003: Charles R. Bantz, Ph.D., is named fourth chancellor of IUPUI

2004: Informatics & Communications Technology Complex is dedicated

Campus Center (opened spring 2008) – The Campus Center boasts a 179-foot bellow tower made of limestone and glass and is the hub of student life and serves as a one-stop destination for students, faculty and staff.

Student membership in IUPUI's fraternities and sororities has tripled since fall 2010.

In 2012, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education approved IU's proposal to create what is believed to be the world's first school dedicated to the study and teaching of philanthropy.

In late 2013, The Science and Engineering Laboratory Building (SELB), the first non-medical building to be built on campus in 20 years, was completed completion along the Science corridor on Blackford Street between New York and Michigan Streets.

Additionally, the stadium will serve as the home field for the newly formed Indy Eleven soccer team of the North American Soccer League, with the team's debut scheduled for 2014.
