FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE: Independently performs the full range of diagnostic, preventive maintenance, alignment and calibration, and overhaul tasks, on both hardware and software on a variety of mail processing, customer service, and building equipment and systems, applying advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs complex testing, diagnosis, maintenance, alignments and calibration, overhaul, and revision, of electronically operated or controlled equipment or systems; may be required to perform maintenance of associated electromechanical equipment and systems. Observes the operation of systems and equipment, and applies various testing and diagnostic methods and procedures to locate and correct malfunctions and/or failures and ensures maximum system performance. Performs equipment inspections to assess the quality of service or maintenance received, and to discover incipient malfunctions; initiates work orders requesting corrective actions for equipment not meeting maintenance or operating standards; estimates time and materials necessary to make corrections and conducts investigations of frequent or serious equipment failures to determine the cause of the breakdown and to recommend remedial maintenance action. Recommends changes to servicing and preventive maintenance activities; assists in the revision of preventive maintenance and operator checklists, and their frequency to sustain the proper degree of maintenance. Performs analyses of equipment failures; reviews operational reports, audits, and other information, to determine where operational enhancement can be made to prevent equipment or systems deterioration. Participates in the installation, removal, modification, assembly, and/or disassembly of systems and equipment. Participates in classroom, on-the-job, and correspondence training programs; attends courses at postal facilities, trade schools, and manufacturers sites; assists in developing and implementing training programs; provides on-the-job training to other lower level maintenance employees. Provides technical support to other employees in the facility or in installations within the area served; performs in-process and final operational checks and tests work completed by other employees; may work without direct supervision. May drive a vehicle or use other appropriate modes of transportation in the course of assigned duties. Follows established safety practices and requirements while performing all duties; reads and adheres to instructions listed in applicable maintenance directives; maintains a library of maintenance directives. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: Ability to demonstrate mechanical comprehension to learn and apply mechanical principles, including a working knowledge of basic mechanical operations (such as levers and pulleys) and the application of physical laws (such as force and gravity). This includes knowledge in the following areas: (A) Power transmission--such as gears, sprockets and chains, belts and pulleys; (B) Power translation--such as cams and cam followers, linkages, springs; (C) Friction reduction'such as bushings, bearings; (D) Fasteners--such as screws, nuts and bolts, pins, rings, clips, couplings. Posting Start: 10/18/2025 Posting End: Open until filled JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for performing highly skilled electric lineman work in the installation, maintenance, alteration and repair of overhead electrical lines, underground cables, electrical substations, and related electrical equipment. Reports to the Electric Superintendent. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Climbs power poles and steel towers, splicing and making repairs to energized lines. Constructs new overhead lines, setting poles, installing cross arms and brackets, stringing wire, and placing equipment such as transformers, switches, cut-outs, lightning arrestors and insulators. Performs switching operations as a member of a line crew. Runs new service lines from pole or transformer to consumer's premises. Reconstructs existing lines and related fittings. Phases out and cuts in new circuits; pulls slack out of primary and secondary wires; tests poles, lines and other facilities. Trims trees to clear wires. Installs, maintains and repairs electrical underground distribution equipment such as conduit duct systems, boxes, and vaults, switches, capacitors, transformers, street lights, concrete foundations. Installs electrical cable in ducts or direct burial; installs cable risers; splices and terminates non-leaded high voltage cables Drives trucks and operates associated equipment as assigned; assists in the instruction and training of other new crew members in techniques of the trade. Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 3-5 years of related electric utility experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Licenses or Certifications: Valid Class B CDL driver's license required. Class A CDL license preferred or the ability to obtain a Class A license within one year of employment. Completion of a recognized three (3) year apprenticeship program as a Certified Lineman/Linewoman, required. Special Requirements: Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Requires pre-employment medical evaluation and satisfactory results from a pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance DOT federal regulations. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of methods, tools, equipment and materials used in electrical installation and repair work and/or in the construction and maintenance of electrical distribution and transmission lines. Knowledge of safety practices and regulations applying to low and high voltage electrical wires. Knowledge of pertinent first-aid principles and techniques including resuscitation methods. Ability to perform electrical installation and repair work and construct and maintain electric distribution and transmission lines. Ability to think and act quickly and appropriately in emergencies. Ability to Work from electrical plans and detailed drawings. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English in person and over the phone. Ability to train and supervise others. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to use protective clothing and equipment such as masks, coats, vests, hard hats, boots, goggles, gloves, reflective vest and other safety devices. Ability to operate or learn to operate personal computer hardware and software associated with UPC locate activities. Skill in use of operating hand and power tools, vehicles, and related light & medium duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Electrical work may be performed in a number of areas including runways, taxiways, and security gates. Work involves technical application of electrical principles. This is a fully seasoned skilled level capable of independently carrying out most assignments typical of the discipline.
