JOB SUMMARY: Provide process engineering support for a particular operating area of the refinery, enabling optimal performance that will meet the company's safety, environmental, and economic objectives. PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include the following:
Safety, Health, and Environmental Support
* Be aware of all unit-specific Safety, Health, and Environmental issues that impact the operating area, the refinery, refinery personnel, and the community.
* Participate in Process Hazard Analysis and Alarm Rationalization activities
* Provide technical support for environmental compliance activities (e.g., emissions performance, release calculations
* Assist in supplying technical data in preparation of environmental permit applications and reports.
Process Health Monitoring
* Monitor process unit performance on a daily and long-term basis to identify trends, deviations, and optimization opportunities.
* Generate and maintain an informational database on all pertinent process variables, including an operating history of units.
* Perform all routine engineering calculations (i.e., mass balances, energy balances, and conversion calculations).
* Prepare reports on catalyst life, performance, regeneration, and requirements of the units.
Troubleshooting
* Assist the Operations Department with unit troubleshooting by conducting field surveys, test runs, and performance evaluations.
* Perform root cause analysis on issues impacting unit performance, culminating in a written report of findings. The root cause analysis and final report are expected to follow the Six Sigma "A3" methodology.
Optimization
* Make proactive recommendations for improving unit yields and/or optimizing energy consumption.
* Ensure that the Planning Department is aware of all current operating constraints.
* Perform studies on the effects of operating variables on product quality, yield, and profitability. The studies are expected to follow the Six Sigma DMAIC structure.
Turnaround Support
* Participate in turnaround planning regarding scope selection, startup / shutdown sequencing, chemical cleaning of equipment, etc.
* During outages, perform process equipment inspections, oversee catalyst loading, and provide technical field guidance.
* Document "as-found" and "as-left" condition of equipment internals.
Project Support (limited)
* Initiate and justify new projects, additional monitoring, and other improvements to the unit.
* Write process specifications for new project.
* Update Process Flow Diagrams, heat and material balances, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, equipment and instrumentation specifications, Process Descriptions, and Instrument Loop Diagrams.
* Provide Process Engineering services during engineering, construction, and startup of projects.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. in Chemical Engineering required. Three years' experience in petroleum industry process engineering recommended. Refinery technical service experience preferred. Strong computer skills required, especially using spreadsheets. Process simulation experience preferred.
