Essential Responsibilities

Collins Space & Defense Rockford is seeking a manufacturing engineer with electro-mechanical background and experience in auxiliary power and/or mechanical actuation products.
The ideal candidate will be an independent worker requiring minimal oversight, have excellent attention to detail and the creativity to provide innovative solutions to complex manufacturing issues.
Key responsibilities include development of specific methods and instructions for manufacture and/or assembly of products; Determination of manufacturing feasibility to: Identify potential fabrication problems; Draw attention to special fabrication requirements and ensure the new technologies are considered in the design phase where feasible and proven.
The Manufacturing Engineer I-2nd shift, as a member of the Integrated Product Team ensures the proposed design is within the allowable cost.
This position will be working on 2nd shift Monday- Friday approximately 3pm- 11pm. Training will be conducted on 1st shift Monday- Friday approximately 7a-3p, until business needs determine.
What You Will Do
Support new program proposals by estimating Manufacturing Engineering tasks, tooling costs and support development of manufacturing plans
Establish touch labor cost targets on shop/lab activities as requested
Define tool and gage requirements
Provide the necessary input and support to the tool design group
Ensure adequate tools and gages are available when needed in the process
Provide support to all activities during the fabrication of the initial unit (first article) of each specific design to resolve processing problems
Review and implement engineering changes to determine feasibility, producibility and delta labor impact
Determine, implement and lead process improvement opportunities, business unit initiatives and corrective actions
Lead efforts to understand non-conformances and reduce Cost of Poor Quality
Lead 3P events, Value Stream Mapping events, and the implementation of Process Certification
Qualifications You Must Have
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and less than 2 years of prior relevant experience

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

Interact with sales and customer contacts to define product requirements, specifications and functional requirements based on market or customer specific needs.
Define and manage development and commercialization timelines. Communicate project timelines with business unit product managers, sales, customers, and manufacturing.
Work with tooling engineering and operations engineering teams to define manufacturing strategy and capital plans required for product implementation.

Develop molding procedures to ensure consistent processing of product on all shifts.

Serve as the technical liaison between product engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, quality, and sales.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
Five to ten years' experience in process engineering methods.
Demonstrated success in managing complex projects with limited direction.
Project management and/or project leadership knowledge.
Experience in the manufacturing and design for thermoforming and sheet extrusion.
Understanding of tooling and machining practices for thermoforming.
Ability to understand big picture and customer related business issues.
Ability to visualize and effectively communicate research results.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
STANDING: Must be able to spend time watching machine and worker processes; must be able to go to all areas of the building to meet with different departments.
BENDING: Will need to bend in order to evaluate machinery, often at awkward angles.
