Summary
(This role is hybrid and can be based at one of our locations: Westlake, OH, Chicago, IL, Louisville, KY or Houston, TX). As a Continuous Improvement Engineer at TravelCenters of America, you will be responsible for analyzing and improving organizational processes with the aim of enhancing both new and existing operations through the implementation of continuous improvement methods. The Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to drive performance changes through data-driven continuous improvement, engineering, and automation efforts, aiming to improve safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance. Utilizing data analytics, engineering techniques, and advanced lean tools, the Engineer will identify and eliminate root causes.
Duties and Responsibilities
Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct process mapping, statistical data analysis, and root cause analysis to identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement. Map and document processes. Independently identify process gaps, recommend, an implement process improvement. Develop and manage a comprehensive, effective, and timely continuous improvement plan to drive value for our customers (transformation plan development and execution). Drive process improvement activities to achieve tangible improvements in key business metrics such as safety, quality, delivery, cost, and employee development.
Project Management: Lead and facilitate continuous improvement projects using Lean, Six Sigma, and other methodologies to drive improved business results. Assess continuous improvement initiatives and provide input and recommendations for future activities. Support go-live and steady-state certifications. Identify and support automation projects. Regularly interact with operations management and/or customers.
Engineering and Lean Competency: Develop and demonstrate competency in a wide range of engineering methods, Lean tools, and quality standards. Coach employees in the use and implementation of continuous improvement, Quality Assurance and Lean principles. Apply engineering methodologies/tools such as process optimization, labor standards studies (time studies), layout optimization, data profiling and analysis, and resource modeling to improve Truck Service field and support center operations.
Facilitation and Execution: Effectively facilitate and execute Value Stream Maps and Kaizen Events through all stages (A3 charter ideations/creation, pre-work identification and completion, regular follow-up, and sustainment). Coach process owners on using lean methods to achieve operational excellence.
Reporting and Strategy: Provide regular reports of data and actions to measure progress against site objectives. Make optimization recommendations that align with Truck Service strategy.
Additional responsibilities:
Design, implement, monitor and maintain the QMS based on established company and/or industry standards.
Implement and monitor a standardized corrective action system.
Analyze customer feedback and develop strategies to enhance customer experience
Support regulatory compliance and certification requirements.
Support process improvements as appropriate related to Quality Assurance for a start-up or expansion.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or related field with at least five years of relevant experience within a similar industry preferred.
Intermediate skills in data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau) and database programming (SQL).
Experience in developing and managing Leader Standard Work, Visual Management Systems, Management Accountability Systems, Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, and 5S/Workplace Organization.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
This role requires at least 50% travel
Intermediate understanding and experience in core engineering and data analysis functions such as slotting, utilization, labor planning, layouts and metrics.
Familiarity with CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD), and Labor Management Systems.
Knowledge of truck service operations, data analytics, industrial engineering and Lean methods.
Understanding of maintenance and repair solutions and automation types, etc.
Familiar with fleet management, vehicle maintenance operations, managed transportation networks, and various equipment types (trucks, tractors, trailers).
Preferred certifications include Lean Six Sigma, and PMP

Guide employees through the workers compensation process alongside plant HR, maintaining records and facilitating all restrictions
Accurate and concise record keeping of all safety related documents and processes including but not limited to training records, SOPS, SDS, and OSHA abatement documents.

Summary

Your role on the team:
Analyzes client data to determine order profiles, storage media application, product slotting, velocity, SKU affinities, ABC analysis
Collaborates with Operations leadership on analysis of periodic reporting and the potential actions to drive improvement
Participates in scope confirmation sessions with client and/or Operations team; identifies changes to scope when they occur and provides necessary documentation and escalation
Leads detailed engineering process on building/operational changes to take the design from conceptualization to full detailed design ready for implementation by performing data analyses, developing material handling specifications, working with vendors to obtain quotes, and generating a detailed, engineered AutoCAD layout with fitment into the selected facility
Prepares engineering documents to describe solution and detailed operating concepts such as storage and shipping capacity, zoning, slotting, waving, etc. and facilitates reviews with key work stream leads including engineering peers, WMS Implementation, and operations
Participates in the creation and/or update of WMS configuration files with all needed locations slotting/zoning/sequences/put-away and picking profiles for the facility and preparing slotting files and/or slotting tool for the facility
Manages material handling vendors through schedule, permitting, installation, commissioning, punch lists, etc. and validates all equipment installation and modifications, including necessary testing of automated material handling equipment
Researches and maintains knowledge of emerging industry practice

What you need: (requirements)
Experience
Bachelor's degree in industrial, Mechanical, Process, Mechatronics or related engineering degree from an accredited institution
Minimum 4 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Must be proficient in AutoCAD and SQL
Must be PC literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
3PL warehousing, distribution center or fulfillment experience required

Location: This role will be onsite at our National Distribution Center in Lockbourne, Ohio.
Under general direction of a Project Director, the Industrial Engineer I is responsible for the maintenance of ABC's labor standards programs and execution of assigned project tasks, including data analytics and process engineering. Assignments may span one or more projects and can range in size, complexity and cross functional involvement.
* Supports the maintenance and management of existing Labor Standards programs, including engineering, system configuration, and issue resolution.
* Works closely with Project Manager and/or Project Director to assist in the development and sustainment of labor engineered standards.
* Performs engineering duties as defined by the project charter or project plan, including time studies, statistical analysis, and data analytics.
* Develops engineering documentation including standard operating procedures, process flow maps, work layouts, and cause and effect diagrams.
* Provides objective, engineering insight into operational and business process change evaluations.
* Provides project support to divisional operations team members within assigned district.
* Performs site audits and validations on performances within the labor engineered standard program(s).
* Supports training requirements to divisional supervisors and managers on the basis of labor engineered standards.
* Willing to travel up to 10% of the time.
* Performs related duties as assigned
Education:
* Requires training and experience in fields such as business administration, engineering, logistics, computer sciences or similar vocations generally obtained through completion of a four year bachelor's degree program or equivalent combination of experience and education.
* Industrial Engineering degree is preferred or other Engineering or Supply Chain Management degrees
Experience:
* Normally requires 0 to 2 years directly related and progressively responsible experience obtained through internships, Co-op and applicable senior design projects
Skills & Knowledge:
* Time Study Experience
* Labor Management Experience, preferably Manhattan
* Training/Educating others on use of Labor Management tools and software
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding with industrial engineering concepts related to time and motion studies including labor utilization, work flow and layout, process improvement and standardization, and/or engineered labor standards.
* Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to communicate (and work) effectively with people from different technical and business backgrounds, acting as a liaison, understanding and appreciating different perspectives and translating into terms necessary for any group or individual to understand.
* Good analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills to evaluate business problems and apply knowledge to identify appropriate solutions.
* Strong organizational skills; attention to detail.
* Strong interpersonal skills.
* Prior experience with performing time studies and use of time study software.
* Strong presentation skills; ability to present and discuss technical information in a manner that establishes rapport, persuades others, and establishes understanding for technical and non-technical audiences.
* Ability to resolve issues effectively and efficiently.
* Proficiency with engineering tools such as Microsoft Excel, Access databases, Minitab, Word and AutoCad.
