Basic Function Under the direction of assigned supervisor, install and support desktops, laptops, application software, printers, computer labs and related technology for Faculty, Staff and Administrators in person, via telephone or with the use of remote access tools. Assist with the support of the college's informationtechnology systems and applications; these systems include the voice and data networks, servers, computers, printers, software and applications used by college employees and students.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Systems Support Specialist I is distinguished from the II by a focus on servicing PCs and related equipment.
Representative Duties
Diagnose and troubleshoot PC related software and hardware problems.
Coordinate timely resolution of and follow-up on software and hardware problems with all levels of IT resources including network, server, application, and help desk support operations.
Work with hardware and software manufacturers' support in handling and if necessary escalating warranty repair and parts replacement issues.
Log details of support provided in Help Desk trouble-ticketing system.
Advance the use of a knowledge repository to share information among all levels of IT service and support.
Develop and use workstation configuration management tools and procedures to perform software distribution, patch management, inventory management and imaging. Install, configure and support a wide variety of complex software applications that support the needs of the college faculty, staff and students.
Develop, recommend and use best tools and practices for computer lab management.
Develop and deploy optimized images in timely and effective manner to the campus computer labs that include a wide variety of both purchased and shareware software packages.
Work with network and server support operations to setup and support effective processes (i.e. Group Policies, Login Scripts, Roaming profiles, etc...) for providing users with access to resources and determining the behavior (profile) of all computers on campus.
Assist with the installation, configuration, and support of network (wired, WIFI) equipment and servers in alignment with district wide IT processes and standards.
Maintain proper hardware replacement planning information to assist with forecasting the regular replacement and/or upgrading of desktop, laptop, printer and related technology assets.
Receive, prioritize, and respond to Help Desk Service tickets, incoming calls, and/or e-mails regarding PC hardware and software problems.
Identify chronic problems and work with Help Desk support operations in performing root-cause analysis on such problems and finding solutions for reducing or eliminating them.
Receive, prioritize, and complete individual and group requests for hardware or software moves, adds, and changes.
Work to identify and implement technology standards for on campus technology support or collaborate with peers across the district to develop best practices and foster continuous improvement of IT services.
Provide input and recommendations on hardware specifications required to meet the computing needs of end users. Help ensure end users are aware of what hardware and software is available for their use and how to obtain support for all IT services.
Work toward attainment of key support goals such an average response time, mean time to repair, end-user satisfaction and number of problems resolved within a given period. Provide brief hands-on training to users in the use of hardware and software.
Maintain system documentation including configuration information for technology you are directly responsible for.
Stay informed of trends in hardware and software, troubleshooting, automation technologies and other changes that could improve PC server and support.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to: Associate's degree supplemented by college-level course work in computer software applications, business practices or a related field and one (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in the use and support of computer software and hardware providing technological support to a variety of end-users.

Assist faculty in developing new instructional activities and demonstrations by acting as a resource for materials and equipment utilization.
Responsible for cleanliness and routine maintenance of all laboratory and storage facilities including participating in year-end lab cleanup.
Operate scientific equipment and provide faculty and students with assistance in interpreting results.
Organize and schedule the preparation and provision of chemical materials, supplies, and technical and non-technical equipment for laboratory courses.
Prepare solutions, chemicals, and materials for instructional laboratory activities.
Provide technical assistance and support to students and faculty on individual experiments/projects.
Using general knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry, recognize commonalities between courses and assist with developing systems for optimizing facilities and equipment use.
When directed, assist in preparing materials needed for faculty research.
Assign work and provide routine guidance to student assistants on basic laboratory support tasks and demonstrate proper procedures as needed.
Department Laboratory Maintenance & Supplies
Assist in the procurement process for chemicals/materials, supplies, and equipment required for laboratory and/or courses by identifying needs, obtaining quotes, and submitting requests for approval.
Assist with routine maintenance on laboratory, stockroom, and scientific equipment.
Assist in monitoring adherence to university laboratory safety practices and report concerns or irregularities to appropriate personnel.
Assist with stockroom requests from various parties.
Maintain clean and safe working practices and spaces in all laboratories and stockroom.
Assist in maintaining inventory records of laboratory/instructional equipment, supplies, and chemicals/materials.
Assist with annual audit of lab equipment, accessory items, chemicals and materials.
Using general knowledge of equipment and their uses, describe needs or problems to appropriate personnel when repairs are required.
Ensure Safe Environment
Assist in the collection, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials by following established procedures and safety protocols.
Follow established procedures for the proper storage of all potentially hazardous materials in laboratories and the stockroom.
Serve as a member of the campus emergency response team and the NSME Safety Committee.
Monitor and follow safety regulations, including compliance with specific regulations and documentation such as hazardous and radioactive material use standards. Report safety or compliance concerns to the Chemical Hygiene Officer or designated safety personnel. Maintain required documentation for department.
Collaborate with the Chemical Hygiene Officer and NSME Lab Safety Coordinator to coordinate hazardous-waste container and labeling needs, maintain lab inventory and storage compliance, support equipment installations, and report facility repairs that involve safety considerations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Equivalent to two years of (recent - within three years) experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to chemistry or a related discipline.
OR
Equivalent two years of college with 16 semester units in chemistry or related discipline in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
OR
Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in chemistry or related discipline in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment may be substituted for the required experience.
LICENSES -
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire: 40-hour Hazardous Waste Worker (HAZWOPER) certification.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's):
Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.
General knowledge of laboratory methods and instructional support services including university safety protocols.
General knowledge of the relevant scientific curriculum, techniques, and skills necessary to prepare specialized materials for assigned lab/instruction.
Proficiency in operating standard office equipment.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team and exercise tact and courtesy with diverse stakeholders.
Ability to evaluate materials and supplies to meet instructional needs.
Basic knowledge and understanding of procedures, techniques, and instrumentation applicable to courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.
Ability to operate technical equipment related to different chemistry and biochemistry courses (e.g., autoclave, NMR).
Ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.
Ability to prepare solutions with reagent-grade chemicals.
Knowledge of common safety procedures for handling and storage of chemicals used in laboratory preparations along with handling both bio-hazardous and hazardous chemical waste.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related discipline is preferred.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
