U-Haul information technology technician job description

Install, test, modify and terminate network cabling within the U-Haul corporate headquarters and data center environment for the night shift (4pm-12am). Perform server installs, drives, switches, routers, ladder racks, cages and cabinets. Work with physical networking equipment, determine work priorities/manage order commitments. Perform custom installations and troubleshooting as well as conduct advanced testing.
Night Shift:
Monday-Friday from 4pm-12am


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Installation, termination, testing and labeling of all cross-connects within the data center. Moving and installation of cabinets and relay racks. Troubleshooting circuits with use of circuit testing equipment. Perform remote hand services with internal IT teams. Hardware installation including but not limited to: shelves, power strips, rails, cable management, and networking equipment. Report current status via the ticketing system (Cherwell), shift reports, and email. Maintain accurate records and document all problems. Exhibit quality workmanship on all work and maintain data center cleanliness. Escalate SR's that require additional information. May perform other duties as assigned.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


Knowledge of cable limitations (distance limitations, etc.) Able to read installation drawings (Visio drawings/spreadsheets/CAD). Data center skills such as installing/moving equipment, replacing defective components and cabling. Basic understanding of booting process and commands. Troubleshoot switched / multiplexed / Media converted cross connects and intra-building cross connects. Familiarity with System Command Languages. Familiar with data center operations concepts working with generators, UPS systems, PDUs, chillers, air handlers, and fire alarm systems. Basic understanding of AC/DC power principles. Experience with installation and repair of commercial alarm, card access systems and/or CCTV systems One or more of the following certifications: Fluke CCTT Copper, Fluke CCTT Fiber, Digital Lightwave Testing, BICSI Level II Copper, BICSI Level II Fiber, Comp-TIA A+, Comp TIA Network+ Preferred but not required.



MINIMAL REQUIRTMENTS


1-3 years of related work experience with server builds in a production data center environment. 2-5 years structured cabling experience
High School Diploma or GED required. Able to perform all essential job functions, including walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation. Able to lift up to 50 lbs. Able to workdays/nights/weekends/holidays, if needed and/or required General knowledge of safe working practices (e.g., familiar with proper tool safety, eye protection, ladder safety, etc.). Proficiency with basic operations of a PC is necessary; Proficient in MS Office applications preferred Strong organizational, time management, and prioritization abilities Possess strong communication skills.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:
Provide monitoring, restoration of service, and change related activities in a 24/7 IT Operations Data Center. Provides change and hardware break/fix support for server environments. Support centralized distributed IT environments to ensure the availability of applications and throughput in accordance with OLAs, SLAs, and other requirements. Oversee process and documentation updates and improvements while providing an interface and support of IT partner teams.


Primary Responsibilities:


Performs monitoring of enterprise-wide architecture to ensure optimal availability; Performs restoration of service of identified incidents. Perform change related activities; Installs and maintains VMware, VSphere, and Microsoft Windows based server environments. Monitors incident, problem, change, and service request queues, ensuring items are addressed in a timely and appropriate manner. Independently pursues tasks as directed by management; Identifies areas in the data center for improvement.



Required Experience:


3+ years IT experience in a large environment such as a Data Center or similar environment. Experience with major operating systems, hardware, , IT management tools, major database and middleware components, storage, back up.



Preferred Experience:


Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field, or equivalent work experience. ADP or equivalent certification preferred, or must be obtained within 6 months of employment. US citizenship is a requirement for certification. Good communication skills, ability to build effective partnerships with peer groups, vendor staff, etc. Ability to focus on multiple tasks and projects, potentially in parallel with regular monitoring and restoration of service activities.
