Inglewood Park Cemetery company history timeline

1905

The proposed establishment of "the largest cemetery in the world" was announced in November 1905, to be "on a high strip of ground two miles southwest of Los Angeles."

In 1905, a group of visionary Centinela Valley businessmen decided to pool their resources and form the Inglewood Park Cemetery Association.

1906

The first interment was made in the new cemetery on July 20, 1906.

1907

Also in 1907 the management placed an order "with the factory in the East" for a $12,000 funeral car to be used "on the electric line" that ran on a right-of-way off Redondo Boulevard (today's Florence Avenue) in front of the cemetery.

In 1907 the directors were Mark G. Jones, F.K. Eckley, Robt.

1908

Another was the September 12, 1908, funeral of Los Angeles city Police Chief Walter H. Auble, who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

1913

Inglewood Park Cemetery became the first cemetery in California to build a community mausoleum when it constructed the Inglewood Mausoleum in 1913.

1933

In 1933, Maytor H. McKinley sold his business interest in Wisconsin and Minnesota and moved to Los Angeles.

1934

In 1934 he became an employee of the L.F. Utter Company, which he eventually purchased and changed the name to Utter-McKinley Mortuaries.

1962

In 1962, Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary was built near the corner Prairie Avenue and Manchester Boulevard, across from the Great Western Forum.

1972

8, 1972, the cemetery made news when AFL Service Employees International Union Local 399 called a strike of gravediggers and maintenance personnel.

1973

Cemetery officials insisted that bodies had not been piling up and were being taken care of during the walkout, which cooled off when most of the 45 striking gravediggers returned to work in January 1973.

1995

In 1995, Inglewood Park Cemetery began recycling its green waste.
