Inn at Mystic company history timeline

1818

The building currently known as The Hoxie House was built by shipmaster and trader Nathaniel Clift in 1818 as the United States Hotel.

1849

The region remained largely unsettled however, until 1849 when Captain Grant of the British fleet, came ashore.

1868

After becoming quite successful in his own right, George Mallory sold this home in 1868 in favor of a larger, more elaborate one just a few blocks away.

1904

Built in 1904, the historic Haley Mansion is the centerpiece of the Inn at Mystic’s vast resort property.

1916

Of a guesthouse established in 1916 by Nona Crofton, her farmer husband Fred taken away to serve in the First World War, leaving behind six young children to care for (including a newborn). Of Billy Eng, who served as cook for more than fifty years.

1920

It was built circa 1920 and was originally called “The Clinton Building” after hotelier J. Clinton Fitch.

1925

The property changed hands in 1925 when Czechoslovakian immigrant Anthony Kohout purchased the property and established a successful auto camp and teahouse.

1929

In 1929, to provide his guests with hotel style accommodation, Anthony Kohout built the Sooke Harbour House.

1945

Listed on the National Registry of Historical Places in America, the Haley Mansion features original 18th century pin pine paneling imported from the home of an English Duke in 1945 mingled with hand carved fireplaces and Dutch tiling.

1950

After the Crofton’s sold the hotel and regular ferry service in the mid 1950’s brought meat and produce from afar, the farm fell into disuse.

1969

The property was converted to a hotel in 1969 by The Whaler’s Inn.

1979

In 1979, current owners and Innkeepers Frederique and Sinclair Philip, purchased Sooke Harbour House, a house with five small guestrooms, no private guest bathrooms, and a small dining room.

1986

In 1986, just seven years after the initial purchase, Frederique and Sinclair built ten additional guestrooms, pioneering the now common practice of providing larger, more luxurious guestrooms featuring fireplaces, sitting areas and bathtubs for two.

2018

Most recently renovated in 2018, the Hoxie House is home to eight deluxe guest rooms and the hotel lobby.
