Innocence Project company history timeline

1992

Founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the organization is now an independent nonprofit.

1997

In 1997, Professor Jacqueline McMurtrie founded the Innocence Project Northwest at the University of Washington School of Law which has been responsible for the exoneration of 14 wrongly convicted individuals in Washington State.

2005

The show picks up after his release from prison and documents charges leveled against Avery for a murder in 2005.

2015

In December 2015, Netflix released the first season of Making a Murderer, a documentary viewed by more than 19 million people in the first 35 days after its release.

2019

In 2019, IPNO launched the Unjust Punishment Project (UPP). The UPP fights to free people whose sentences are shockingly disproportionate to the crimes for which people are imprisoned.
