A nonexempt position responsible for nursing care under the supervision of physicians and clinical services manager. May be responsible for basic clinical tasks including but not limited to, vital signs, routine blood draws, immunization, injections, point of care testing, and EKG's and provides care that is consistent with Inspira policies and external regulations and requirements.
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Graduation from an approved practical nursing program.
Minimum one year of LPN experience; clinical experience preferred.
Experience in a medical practice environment strongly preferred.
Certification/Licensure:
State-licensed practical nurse.
American Heart Healthcare Provider CP.
Knowledge & Skills:
Able to operate multi-line phone system, update and modify EMR records on computer, understand medical charting, able to operate stethoscope, echocardiography (EKG) machine, ear-washing instruments, blood pressure cuff, speculums, and other nursing items.
May involve use of walkers, wheelchairs, pulse oximetry, and oxygen tanks.
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Familiarity with health care systems, regulations, policies, and functions. Understanding of documentation standards.
Knowledge of equipment, supplies, and materials needed for medical treatment. Understanding of basic laboratory procedures including preparation and screening.
Knowledge of infectious disease management and control and safety standards.
Skill in reading and following written and oral medical orders.
Skill in initiating appropriate emergency procedures.
Skill in handling a number of tasks simultaneously.
Skill in performing blood draws.

Triage/Coordinates and performs direct patient care and clinical flow.

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Nurse Extern will strengthen their clinical knowledge and skills while performing direct and indirect patient care. This position prepares the Nurse Extern in the transition from student nurse to professional nurse.
The Nurse Extern supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing to preparing candidates for registered nurse licensure. Students of diploma and two-year programs must have completed at least two clinical nursing semesters with a minimum grade of "C". Baccalaureate students must have completed all junior-level courses with a minimum grade of "C". Students must submit a skills checklist completed by their school of nursing to validate academic and clinical standing.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
Current American Heart Association basic life support (BLS) for the healthcare provider certification required upon hire or transfer.
EXPERIENCE: Two semesters of clinical student nursing experience. Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and collaborate with other team members; ability to be flexible, set priorities, solve problems and use judgment in difficult situations.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Demonstrates competencies on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
General hospital exposure potential hazards and risks, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances and potential injury.
Reaching, stooping, kneeling and crouching approximately 25% of a workday; visual and physical ability required to work at a computer terminal; standing and walking approximately 75% of a workday; lifting approximately 50 --100 pounds frequently, with assistance occasionally; physical abilities required to push, pull or transport equipment and patients.
