1930

von Neumann In John von Neumann: Princeton, 1930–42…the first professors at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Princeton, New Jersey.

Since 1930, it has served as a model for protecting and promoting independent inquiry, prompting the establishment of similar institutes around the world, and underscoring the importance of academic freedom worldwide.

1932

In 1932 Veblen resigned from Princeton and became the first professor in the new Institute for Advanced Study.

1933

By the start of the academic year 1933–34, the Institute had a Faculty of five leading mathematicians and theoretical physicists: James Alexander, Einstein, von Neumann, Veblen, and Weyl, as well as over twenty visitors.

Flexner had successfully assembled a faculty of unrivaled prestige in the School of Mathematics which officially opened in 1933.

1935

In 1935 quantum physics pioneer Wolfgang Pauli became a faculty member.

The School of Humanistic Studies and the School of Economics and Politics were established in 1935.

1940

In Wolfgang Pauli: Exile and return…professorship in 1940 at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., United States, where he worked mainly on meson theory.

1955

Einstein remained at the Institute until his death in 1955, leaving a 20-year legacy in the history of the Institute’s growth and reputation.

A separate School of Natural Sciences was not established until 1966.

1970

The IASH, formally established in 1970, is the oldest Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Britain’s first, and Scotland’s only IAS. However, in its nearly fifty-year history, no effort has been made to tell IASH’s story.

1973

The School of Social Science was founded in 1973.

1991

From 1991, Phillip A. Griffiths served as director.

2012

Lee In Tsung-Dao Lee…professor of physics at the Institute for Advanced Study, and three years later he returned to Columbia to assume the first Enrico Fermi professorship in physics; he retired as professor emeritus in 2012.
