IDA company history timeline
From this idea in April 1956 and with financial assistance from the Ford Foundation, the Institute for Defense Analyses was born.
Research institutes established in 1956
Collocated with IDA corporate headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, SAC traces its roots back to 1956, when IDA was formed.
IDA’s support of the National Security Agency began at its request in 1959, when it established the Center for Communications Research in Princeton, New Jersey.

University oversight of IDA ended in 1968 in the aftermath of Vietnam War-related demonstrations at Princeton, Columbia, and other member universities.
These formal academic relationships ended at the height of the Vietnam War in 1968 as anti-war demonstrations at member universities forced collegiate leaders to distance their institutions from the military-intelligence complex.
In 2003, IDA assumed responsibility for the Science and Technology Policy Institute, a separate FFRDC providing technical and analytic support to the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President, and to other executive branch organizations.
