Distinguishing Features of the Class: The work involves responsibility for the cleaning, care and upkeep of a school site, buildings or an assigned section thereof in a suburban school district. Work duties include routine cleaning tasks and semi-skilled reoccurring repair and maintenance. Does related work as required.
Qualifications:
Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of a High School Equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in commercial cleaning practice or general building maintenance including experience in any one (1) of the following trades; Carpentry, Electrical, H.V. and A.C. Systems, Plumbing; OR
Five (5) years of experience in commercial cleaning practices or general building maintenance, including experience in any one (1) of the following trades; Carpentry, Electrical, H.V. and A.C. Systems, Plumbing; OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B). AND
Possession of a valid Class 5 New York State's driver's license at the time of appointment.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
Special Requirements:
Good knowledge of commercial cleaning practices and procedures;
working knowledge of the maintenance and repair practices and procedures related to buildings, its fixtures and operating equipment;
working knowledge of the properties of various cleaning substances;
ability to make semi-skilled plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry and mechanical repairs;
ability to operate plumbing, electrical, hearing, ventilating and air conditioning systems following established procedures;

Reports to: Supervision is received from a Head or Senior Custodian, or an administrative employee of higher rank who assigns, observes and monitors the work on a frequent basis.
Supervises: Supervision may be exercised over a small number of cleaners and laborers by assigning their work, giving instructions, providing assistance and observing the work progress.
Typical Work Activities:
Is familiar with and contributes to the successful implementation of the District's Mission and Belief statements;
Performs a variety of cleaning, including mopping floors, washing walls, ceilings and windows; dusting woodwork and furniture; stripping and finishing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; collecting and disposing rubbish, etc.;
Performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair work, such as fixing or replacing broken shelving, hardware, glazing windows, and repairing window coverings; unplugging toilets, traps and sinks; replacing faucet washers, repair and adjust flush valves; replace blown fuses, switches, outlets, ballasts, light fixtures, etc.;
Maintains grounds by cutting grass, trimming shrubbery, raking leaves, removing snow, and maintaining power equipment used in this work;
Operates hot water and low pressure boilers, heating and ventilating systems and performing routine maintenance on heating and hot water equipment, such as replacing filters, periodically cleaning equipment and fire box to insure efficient operation, replacing or adjusting thermostats and related controls;
Replenishes lavatories, cleaning and other supplies;
Supervises lower level custodial personnel in cleaning and care activities;
Reports damages or needed maintenance repairs requiring a higher level repair capability;
May be required to serve as watch attendant;
May set up equipment and seating facilities for meetings, demonstrations, etc.;
Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as directed by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.

Performs general cleaning tasks including sanitizing and disinfecting. This position has been evaluated for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and is subject to premium pay for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a payroll week at $16/hour.

Under the general supervision of the Custodian Supervisor and/or Manager of Custodial Services. The Custodian is responsible for the overall cleanliness, sanitation, appearance and safety of their assigned area within the Hamilton College facilities. The custodian may also be required to assist with additional projects or maintenance of additional areas on campus as needed.
Responsibilities
Maintaining the cleanliness and safety of assigned area(s) by performing duties which include but are not limited to, dusting, sweeping, waxing, vacuuming, polishing, washing windows, washing walls and wood work with a variety of finishes, washing furniture, bathrooms, shampooing carpets.
Gathering and proper removal of trash, debris and recyclables. Emptying and cleaning refuse containers.
Responsible for the maintenance, safe storage and tracking of inventory cleaning supplies. Requests inventory when needed.
Operates machinery necessary in a safe and efficient manner including, but not limited to, vacuum cleaners, buffing machines, scrubbers, water pick-ups, upholstery cleaners, carpet shampooers, extractors, tenant floor machine.
Performs additional functions such as keeping building entrances and walkways free of ice, snow and other debris, changing light bulbs, moving and set up of furniture, reporting building damage, malfunctions and hazardous conditions to the Work Control Secretary, etc.
Performs housekeeping duties for guest rooms at the Bristol Campus Center and Roger's Estate. Supports Summer Programs with similar housekeeping services, as directed.
Performs sets-up and breaks down of campus catered functions and special events including but not limited to, in-house stage flats, podiums, tables, chairs, partitions, coat racks.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent required. 1 year cleaning/custodial experience preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience in a similar field will be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of standard custodial methods which include maintaining, cleaning, and preserving a wide variety of surfaces, or the ability to learn procedures and effectively demonstrate these methods no later than the end of the introductory period.
Knowledge of the proper use of a wide range of chemicals and personal protective equipment (PPE) according to state and federal regulations or the ability to effectively demonstrate proper use of chemicals and PPE no later than the end of the introductory period.
Ability to handle and properly dispose of hazardous materials and waste.
Ability to adapt to changing work priorities, work independently and in a team oriented environment.
Ability to learn and upgrade job skills as needed to meet changing job conditions and demands.
Problem solving and time management skills.
Ability to work overtime, as required.

10. Empty trash receptacles and insert new trash liners. Remove collected trash to
dumpster for disposal.
11. Clean vacated dorm room, bathrooms, lounges and public areas during trimester breaks.
12. Clean and scrub gymnasium floor, Aerobics Room floor and Fitness Room floors
13. Clean and sanitize Fitness Room equipment.
14. Collect recycling
15. Report items that are in need of repair (doors, furniture, lights toilets, etc.), and conditions that present a hazard to the College community and its visitors.
16. Use cleaning products as instructed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
17. Use personal protective equipment as required by product instructions, OSHA
and any other regulatory agency requirements, or as instructed by supervisory
personnel.
18. Other duties as assigned.

* All cleaning equipment, including but not limited to, brooms, mops, scrubbers,
buffers, burnishes, vacuum cleaners, shampooer/extractor, dusters, etc.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT:
