Special Education Educational Assistant for 2025-26
DESCRIPTION: Assisting teachers with the needs of Special Education students Under the supervision of certified staff members, assists with educational, social, behavioral and other needs of special education students and assists with classroom/school duties. Essential functions and responsibilities are subject to, and performed according to, the particular needs of the students assigned. Also performs related work as directed.
Education and/or Experience:
1. High school diploma
For Educational Assistant positions that work in Title I-funded programs, the Educational Assistant must have a high school diploma and either an associate's degree, two years of college, or a passing score on a state or local assessment that demonstrates their ability to assist with instruction in reading, writing, and math.
2. Previous teaching or aide experience in an educational environment involving students with disabilities, or related training and experience, is preferred.
Additional Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks:
1. Assist with instruction and behavior support of students with disabilities under the supervision of the special education teacher and other certified staff, including performing tasks related to goals and objectives unique to each assigned student.
2. Perform a variety of tasks in both general education and special education classrooms and other areas of the school, including supervision of students on school grounds, including the playground, halls, bathrooms, lunchroom and drop-off, and pick-up areas, and on field trips.
3. Feeding and assistance with personal needs of students, including bathroom needs, of students as necessary.
4. Assist with preparation of materials and performance of recordkeeping and other duties of a clerical nature.
5. Timely and reliable daily attendance.
6. Other essential functions and responsibilities may exist as necessitated by the needs of each school and its students, and the particular EA assignment.

Basic Duties (not all inclusive):
Contributes to the social, emotional, and academic success of students.

Monitor and assist students during whole class instruction, independent work under teacher direction and other unstructured school settings.

Hours/Schedule: All Paraeducator positions are scheduled for 8 hours per day (7.5 working hours and ½ unpaid lunch break). This position is expected to work all student days; between 174 and 177 depending on whether you are assigned to an elementary or secondary building. Typically, the position would only be in attendance the same days as students but may be asked to attend professional development sessions on non-student days as well. Daily attendance for this position is essential for the success of our students.
Rate of pay: The position is an hourly position that is "paid as you go" this means that you are only paid for the hours that you work. The hourly rate of pay starts at $15.00 per hour but depending on your past work experience ($0.10 - $0.20 more per hour maxed at 5 years' experience), post-secondary education ($0.50 - $1.00 more per hour), and certain certifications you may have, there are differentials you could qualify for.
Benefits: This position is a full-time school-year position and does qualify for a full benefits package including health and dental insurance. In addition to the traditional benefits offered, the District provides for all full-time school-year employees a $30,000 life insurance policy at no cost to you. You also are enrolled from day one, in the state sponsored retirement program, IPERS. The District contributes 9.44% of your wages to this. IPERS requires that you contribute 6.29% of your wages.
Paid Leave: The District has both paid sick leave and paid personal leave. As a full-time school-year employee of the District you are given 2 personal days to use throughout the school year. You are given sick leave based on the number of years you are with the District; in your first year you are given 10 days, pro-rated for the month that you start employment. This position is not eligible for paid vacation leave.
Paid Holidays: This position has 7 paid holidays throughout the school year. Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Memorial Day.

Under direct supervision, Teacher Assistants will support student learning by facilitating educational activities directly with students in the classroom or on an individual basis, supervising student behavior both in and out of the classroom, and providing administrative support to the teacher
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Clear a state criminal record check and a child abuse check
Be a minimum of 18 years old

Support academic student learning by being physically present in the classroom on a consistent (daily) basis, helping students complete tasks, answering student questions, providing individualized attention when required, and supporting the classroom teacher's educational directives
Provide student supervision inside the classroom in conjunction with the classroom teacher, and outside of the classroom, which may include recess breaks, study halls, lunch breaks, testing periods and other special activities
Support students with mild to severe learning, emotional, health, or mental disabilities by providing an inclusive learning environment with specialized attention and positive reinforcement
Health Teacher Assistant
May need to provide student assistance with daily living activities, such as cooking, cleaning, eating, dressing, hand washing, toileting, etc.
Attend to special medical needs or health care needs of the student, including dispensing medications, giving injections, checking vital signs, tube feedings, changing diapers, etc.
Provides administrative support to classroom teachers as requested, to include answering phones, making copies, distributing or collecting student assignments, preparing learning materials, recording grades and attendance, and other tasks as assigned by the Building Principal or classroom teacher
Regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job in order to maintain a student's regular routines, foster student learning and build student relationships; the ability to perform the identified tasks and possess the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities; the ability to perform the identified physical requirements
