Job Description
Uncommon Special Education teachers are passionate about developing and monitoring accommodations for students with special needs. Special Education teachers advocate for students and believe that specialized instruction and related services increase academic achievement. Special Education teachers offer academic, emotional, and physical support while maintaining high expectations.
Responsibilities
1. Instruction
You'll modify, differentiate, and teach an inclusive curriculum that emphasizes diversity.
You'll collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that offer appropriate accommodations and modifications.
You'll create an inclusive and safe environment where students feel empowered to become self-guided learners.
2. Special Education Specific Responsibilities
You'll collaborate with general education teachers, school leaders, and families to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments and ensure compliance with Individualized Education Plans.
You will gather academic growth data and write goals to prepare for annual IEP meetings.
You will teach pull-out, push-in, small group, and one-on-one instruction and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.
3. School Culture
You'll build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
You'll partner with students' families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs.
You'll engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.

You'll partner with your grade level team to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies.

Required Experience:
A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
Academic expertise in Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields of study.
Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by the time employment begins. You do not need to be certified to be hired; however, if hired you will need to pass state teacher certification tests to meet the MA state requirements.
Teachers are qualified to teach independently if the teacher holds one of the following qualifications for the appropriate grade and severity level:
MA special education license
Special education license or equivalent issued by another state or
Documented completion of approved undergraduate or graduate program in special education
If a teacher does not hold any of the qualifications above, the teacher may only deliver specialized instruction if:
The teacher is under the
direct
supervision and oversight* of an educator who holds an initial or professional special education license (Moderate Disabilities License), or is otherwise qualified as per above;
And
Must pass the following MTELs within the first year of employment:
Communications and Literacy Skills test, and,
MTEL subject area tests (English or Mathematics)

The Special Education Coordinator is passionate about supporting the students who are at-risk for academic underperformance due to emotional and/or physical challenges so that they can succeed in the school's rigorous academic program. The Special Education Coordinator holds primary responsibility for providing academic, emotional, and physical services for students who require additional support to thrive within the school's core academic program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure that all students receive the educational services that they need to succeed;
Identify incoming students' special education needs as indicated by family questionnaire responses;
Review the results of intake assessments of new students to identify special education needs;
Schedule and providing pull-out services as needed;
Schedule, coordinate, and chair team and pre-referral meetings;
Conduct academic testing as part of the evaluation process;
Coordinate and conducting classroom observations and testing (i.e. psychological) as needed;
Ensure that all regular education teachers know and understand all classroom accommodations required by IEPs;
Deliver one-on-one, small group, and whole class instruction as appropriate;
Maintain student records regarding special education issues and preparing reports for regulatory agencies;
Ensure compliance with all City, State, and Federal special education law and regulations;
Contribute to the design of curriculum materials;
Design and administer rigorous, standards-based assessments and using assessment data to refine curriculum and instruction;
Help to create a culture of order, structure, humanity, and academic rigor in the classroom and school as a whole; and
Collaborate with other teachers, other school staff, and administrators to ensure that all our students climb the mountain to high school and college.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Classroom Assistants support our Classroom Teachers in providing the physical and instructional needs of students as well as any additional needs in the classroom. Classroom Assistants design and prepare instructional material, and plan and implement various functional activities. They provide direct supervision and monitor students' work across both an individual and small group environment.
SUPERVISOR: Secondary Principal and Assistant Principal
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist teachers in preparation of instructional materials and classroom visuals for student and instructor use.
Escort and monitor students to and from the classroom and other various activities (lunch, therapies, etc.).
Implement behavior management plans for individual students under the direction of the teacher.
Conduct instructional exercises as assigned by the teacher; work with individuals or small groups, adapting to students' individual, medical, physical, communicative, instructional and emotional needs.
Participate in student data collection, documentation, and interpretation.
Assume responsibility for the supervision and instruction of students in the absence of the Classroom Teacher.
Assist students with physical disabilities according to their physical and/or medical needs or personal needs that may include feeding, toileting and personal hygiene.

Requirements
High School Diploma or GED Certificate
A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language required, with native, or near-native ASL fluency preferred
ASL Classes may be required based on ASL fluency
Ability to work effectively as part of an educational team
Prior experience working with children preferred
Ability to communicate and accept and constructively use feedback and suggestions regarding job responsibilities and performance
