Snow Valley Mountain Resort instructional assistant job description

Cadets assist the ski/snowboard Instructors in the CLC with children ages 5-12 years of age as assigned by the Director, or CLC Base Coordinator. They will be called upon to assist the Director and the instructors of the CLC in an effort to create excellence in the Instructor and Cadet staff, providing a quality experience for the guests of Snow Valley Mountain Resort.

Essential Functions/Physical Demands:

  • A large percentage of shift work is spent outside performing indicated duties, skiing and/or snowboarding, sometimes in extreme weather conditions and temperatures. Holidays and weekends are required at the discretion of the CLC Director. A minimum amount of days per month are required.
  • Frequent periods of standing, bending at the waist and neck, stooping, and repetitive use of hands/arms, including grasping, reaching, pulling and pushing
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of 20-35 pounds or more with assistance
  • Assisting with and attending to children, with duties including but not limited to; set - up / clean -up, and snack service.

Experience/Training/Education:

Required:

  • Must pass a post - offer / pre-employment ski and/or snowboard skills assessment
  • Must be at least 14 years old
  • May be required to pass a post-offer "fit for duty" physical exam and drug screening, provided by Snow Valley

Knowledge/skills/abilities:

Children Ski and Snowboard Cadets are to read and follow the Rules and Procedures set out in their Snow Valley Employee Handbook as well as the Snow Valley Ski & Snowboard Learning Center Guide. Have the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with guests, staff and management. Have the ability to comply with policies and procedures; ability to prioritize, organize and complete tasks in a timely manner.

Physical and Environmental Elements:

Work may be strenuous at times and performed during inclement weather and on challenging terrain. The temperature can range from well below freezing to in excess of 80 degrees Fahrenheit with high winds, snow, rain, dense fog and intense sun. The terrain is often on uneven and icy ground. Protective equipment is strongly recommended including but not limited to full sun protection, eye protection, adequate clothing for conditions and expected conditions.

Who we are looking for:

Are you the Instructional Assistant we have been looking for? The Susan Wayne Center of Excellence (SWCE) and the River Run Academy offer intensive residential, educational, medical, and clinical services for adolescent boys and girls who are mild to moderately cognitively impaired with concurrent behavioral, mental health, and medical issues. Located in rural Thompson, Connecticut, our state-of-the-art campus offers warm, home-like facilities in a pastoral setting. Our students have often experienced complex trauma and often have not been successful in other settings. SWCE students typically require additional support in the classroom, as well as with emotional and behavioral difficulties, executive functioning, and life skills.

We provide individualized instruction to meet each student's unique educational needs and do not exceed a six to one student-teacher ratio. In addition, residential counselors are present in all classrooms to provide assistance. We encourage each student to proceed at their own pace in order to master the academic and social skills needed for a fulfilling future. Our students thrive in a highly structured and nurturing school environment. We provide an academic curriculum, which adheres to the CT Common Core State Standards. In addition, students learn pre-vocational and vocational, as well as life and health skills. Students attend classes for a regular academic year.

Salary Range: $18-$20 per hour depending on qualifications

YOU will support the education of the students in the classroom, either directly or indirectly under the supervision of the teacher and the Director of Education.

Requirements:

Applicants must have an Associate's Degree. Applicants with a four-year college or university degree with major course work in human services, psychology, social work, or sociology are preferred.
Applicants with previous experience working as a paraprofessional or who have passed the Para Pro Exam are preferred.

JOB
OBJECTIVE:
Provides support services that help students benefit from the educational program.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Valid state department of education license/permit as determined at the time of appointment. Meets all mandated state/federal criteria (i.e., approved degree, completion of requisite higher education credit hours/courses, or acceptable score on an authorized professional standards test). Behavioral management skills substantiated by training/work experience. Duties may require agility, physical strength, and stamina to address the needs of students with problem behavior and/or students requiring physical assistance (e.g., mobility, transferring, positioning, etc.). Complies with drug-free workplace rules, board policies and administrative guidelines/procedures. Demonstrates dependability/flexibility. Reacts to interruptions/emerging priorities effectively. Embodies high ethical standards/integrity. Accepts personal responsibility for decisions/conduct. Exhibits consistent, impartial and resourceful critical-thinking skills. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Braille
Uses a variety of techniques (e.g., recorded texts, tactile graphics, Braille, etc.) to adapt materials as needed by the student and teacher. Ensures that adapted materials are accurate/appropriate. Provides Braille output using a variety of systems (e.g., Braille translation software or comparable electronic rapid Braille production system, braillewriters, etc.). Operates and/or assists assigned students in the use of specialized equipment (e.g., braillers, keyboarding equipment, electronic scanners, personal computers, etc.). Performs basic Braille formatting for literacy, foreign language and Nemeth Code Rules except as requested by the teacher to address student reading ability. Translates student brailled materials.
Classroom
Performs non-teaching classroom and ancillary duties under the direct supervision of an assigned teacher. Helps individuals or small groups of students with remedial or enrichment activities. Helps students with disabilities participate in appropriate classroom activities as directed.
Intervention
Helps individuals or small groups of students with remedial or enrichment activities. Reinforces instructional objectives introduced by the teacher. Helps implement intervention strategies identified in individualized educational plans (IEP). Prepares/distributes program materials. Sets up classroom equipment for use (e.g., computers, media resources, etc.). Keeps program areas orderly. Cleans/maintains equipment as directed.
Special Education
Performs student support services that may include assistance with daily living activities, behavior management, discrete trial training, instructional support, social skills training, task redirection, etc. Supports an inclusive educational environment. Helps students with disabilities participate in appropriate learning activities. Assists with behavior management plans when required. Facilitates student mobility. Helps students use assistive and/or augmentative devices. SIT
Determines seat assignments. Takes attendance. Ensures that students have books and classroom assignments. Helps students with questions. Authenticates student permission to leave the room.
