Job Description
Uncommon Special Education teachers are passionate about developing and monitoring accommodations for students with special needs. Special Education teachers advocate for students and believe that specialized instruction and related services increase academic achievement. Special Education teachers offer academic, emotional, and physical support while maintaining high expectations.
Responsibilities
1. Instruction
You'll modify, differentiate, and teach an inclusive curriculum that emphasizes diversity.
You'll collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that offer appropriate accommodations and modifications.
You'll create an inclusive and safe environment where students feel empowered to become self-guided learners.
2. Special Education Specific Responsibilities
You'll collaborate with general education teachers, school leaders, and families to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments and ensure compliance with Individualized Education Plans.
You will gather academic growth data and write goals to prepare for annual IEP meetings.
You will teach pull-out, push-in, small group, and one-on-one instruction and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.
3. School Culture
You'll build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
You'll partner with students' families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs.
You'll engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.

Required Experience:
A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
Academic expertise in Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields of study.
Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Certification is not required to be hired at Uncommon, but you do need to meet NY state certification eligibility requirements. To meet these requirements, you must enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher during your employment with us if you do not have a degree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are required to become certified in the state of New York within a reasonable period after beginning employment.

Compensation
Compensation for this role is between $50,000 to $64,700.
Starting pay is determined using various factors including but not limited to relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experience will likely have a starting salary of $50,000.

Elementary Schools - 6.5 hour work day (plus 30 minute unpaid lunch)
Secondary Schools - 7.0 hour work day (plus 30 minute unpaid lunch)

Reports To:
Building Administrator, Classroom Teacher(s), Special Education Director
Position Description:
The Teacher Aide would support students with a diverse range of needs and abilities in the general education and/or special education classrooms and programs.
Responsibilities May Include:
Assisting and supporting the teacher(s) in classroom setting
Providing one-on-one or small group support to students who may need additional assistance in subject area(s)
Supporting student(s) with special learning needs, modifications, or accommodations as directed by classroom teacher or individualized education plans (IEPs)
Assisting with supervision of student(s) across various settings throughout the school day
Assisting student(s) with daily activities, as required, including helping with mobility, personal care, or communication
Assisting student(s) with academic assignments and social-emotional development
Performing routine clerical duties and record keeping
Attending building and district meetings and workshops as required
Skills:
Strong communication skills and the ability to interact positively with students, teachers and staff
Basic computer skills, including familiarity with classroom technology and educational software
Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team
Able to work in a collaborative environment
Ability to understand and respond to student(s) behavior
Dependable
Patience, flexibility and ability to adapt to various classroom/student needs
Physical Demands:
Able to sit, stand and move around for extended periods of time
Ability to assist students with physical needs
Some positions may require assisting students with physical disabilities or mobility issues
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:
(A) One (1) year of full time or its part time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working in a clerical capacity; OR,
(B) One (1) year of full time or its part time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working with children; OR
(C) Possession of a certificate of completion for a course for Child Care through an occupational school, The American Red Cross, or similar agency; OR
(D) A combination of experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.
NOTE: Successful completion of one (1) year of college education beyond high school (minimum of 30 semester college credit hours) may be substituted for the one (1) year of experience

What You'll Do
You will be matched with opportunities to be a classroom assistant for 1-2 hour shifts at schools, buildings and communities across New York City. These classroom assisting opportunities will be for terms that could last anywhere from 6 weeks to 18 weeks. In this role, you'll have the following responsibilities:
Assist the primary classroom instructor in facilitating a great class
Consistently arrive at your class on time (or early!)
Create memorable experiences for the children in your classrooms
