The Westmoreland Intermediate Unit is seeking qualified applicants for Full-Time Classroom Assistants within our School Age Program at the Clairview School. The Classroom Assistant assists teachers in the educating and training of special education children. The assistant's role is to increase the potential effectiveness of the professional and increase the quality of instruction by freeing the teacher from the non-instructional activities of the classroom. She/he is not responsible for the design, direction or evaluation of the teaching-learning process. A classroom assistant may be used in any instructional situation only under the direct, immediate supervision of a certified professional to perform those tasks specified in the . The role of the assistant varies according to the program assignment.
Description of Duties:
Meets and discharges students at the bus.
Aids students in removing and putting on wraps, bathing, feeding and toileting.
Leads students in recreational and training games.
Helps teacher by instructing students in achieving individual goals.
Prepares work materials -- copies, art materials, bulletin board.
Issues materials to students.
Maintains housekeeping aspects of the classroom.
Assists teacher with record keeping.
Attends meetings as required.
Secures instructional materials from office, resource room, library, etc.
Performs instructional services as delegated by the teacher as a reinforcement technique.
Assists students in the use of teaching devices -- special individual materials.
Carries out teacher's prescribed instructions for reinforcing activities in the visual, auditory and gross motor areas.
Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Executive Director, Student Services Director or designee.
