ROLE AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Para-Educator is responsible for assisting the program instructor in the delivery of instruction, reinforcement of instruction and the remediation of students in the area of responsibility. May serve as an active member of teams such as RTI team, data team, PBS team, school improvement team, etc.
Assist the teacher in communicating and upholding behavior and conduct expectations found in the school-wide behavior management plan; assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment in the classroom.

Requirements
Complete at least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or
Obtain an associate's degree (or higher) from an accredited institution; or meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of an approved formal state academic assessment in the following areas:
Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
The State Board of Education approved the following formal assessments by which a paraprofessional may choose to demonstrate this knowledge:
Basic Skills Examination MTTC - A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional
Readiness Exam
ETS Parapro Assessment - A passing score of 460 is required
While no longer available, the following assessments would also provide qualification:

Accompany the class to and from and remain with them during all special classes.
Be pleasant and polite with parents, but all discussion and questions regarding children should be directed to the classroom teacher.
Join the teacher during free play/small group time. Help at the project table or interact with the children during their free-play time. Help children either in small groups, or individually.
Join the teacher on the floor, close to the children, during circle time and help children who need help focusing or provide appropriate redirection.
Clean the tables after projects, snack and lunch using warm water, soap and bleach
Maintain the cleanliness of the easel area (including cleaning paint brushes)
Ensure the classroom snack cabinet is supplied with snacks and paper goods (napkins, bowls, spoons, forks, cups, etc.)
Set up snack and juice
Keep track of diapers, pull-ups, extra clothes, wipes and send a note for any child who needs supplies
Change children's diapers
Assist children using the bathroom
Assist children at arrival with coats, backpacks and lunches. Check backpacks for notes/supplies when necessary.
Help and direct the children to clean.
Participate in the 16 hours of required professional development as provided by Farber Hebrew Day School.
