The main duty of an intensive case manager is to assist clients in accessing medical, psychiatric, social, residential, financial, and other services that they need. Usually, they also coordinate and monitor clients' treatment or rehabilitative services.

The typical duties of an intensive case manager revolve around completing mandated paperwork, creating client outcome reports, assessing the needs of new clients, developing client service plans, and monitoring service delivery from various programs or providers. They may also provide 24/7 emergency coverage on a rotating basis to ensure that clients can receive immediate care. Many intensive case managers also help clients form a support system outside of their mental health services.

To become an intensive case manager, one must have at least a bachelor's degree in human services or a similar field. Certification in case management can be an advantage but is not always necessary. Moreover, an intensive case manager must have exemplary skills in communication, time management, and organization, as well as a high level of compassion and patience. Intensive case managers earn an average of $45,000 per year. Case managers with at least one to two years in mental health services or other relevant job experience tend to get higher offers.
