Interface Solutions company history timeline

1949

The history of BCS Automotive Interface Solutions goes back until 1949 when Werner Messmer founded Messmer Radolfzell, today’s facility in Radolfzell, Germany.

1973

In 1973 he quit his job with Milliken & Co. in order to start his own business.

The new company produced its first piece of carpet on New Year's Eve, 1973.

1975

These contributions, along with the beginning of the office building boom, helped CI-Georgia triple its sales to $2.4 million by the end of 1975.

1978

By 1978, Interface's sales had reached $11 million.

1982

Meanwhile, the American joint venture continued to grow, with sales swelling to $57 million in 1982.

1983

Interface also went public for the first time in 1983, selling its shares over-the-counter.

Interface had been trying to acquire the company since about 1983, when it was first put up for sale by the 13 children of Heuga's founder.

1984

Aided by these acquisitions, Interface's sales climbed to $107 million for 1984.

1986

The company purchased Guilford Industries for $97 million in 1986.

1987

That company recorded sales of $10 million in 1987.

1990

Interface generated $623 million in revenue in 1990.

1991

These contractors operated under the name IMAGE (Interface Maintenance Advisory Group of Europe). Interface also reorganized its corporate structure in late 1991.

Sales shrank for the first time in the company's history in 1991, largely due to the recession in the global economy.

1992

By 1992, Interface's antimicrobial chemical Intersept was being used in over a dozen product categories, including paints, wall coverings, ceiling tiles, carpet, fabrics, and coating materials.

1994

Lucas Industries, a British manufacturer of automotive and aerospace components acquired Kelsey-Hayes in the US in 1994.

1994: In the early ‘90s a customer asked, "What's your company doing for the environment?" When Ray realized he couldn't answer this question, he created a company task force to solve it.

The goal of zero environmental footprint was formally recognized as Mission Zero®, giving a name to the journey that started in 1994.

1996

In 1996, Charlie Eitel was named president and chief operating officer of Interface.

2012

Until 2012, BCS Automotive Interface Solutions consisted of two regional business units, Body Control Systems North America and Body Control Systems Europe & Emerging Markets.

2013

The vision to ‘Be the global leader in automotive interface solutions’, already created in 2013, is our long-term target.

2015

In 2015, the German automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen acquired TRW. During that time from then to now, the BCS business has started to put high attention to the changing automotive market and to invest into new technologies.

2018

Since end of April 2018, BCS Automotive Interface Solutions is a standalone company.

In 2018 it generated a revenue of 1.07 billion US dollar.

2020

A global manufacturer of commercial flooring and the world’s largest manufacturer of carpet tile has actually developed a carbon negative flooring prototype, with the goal to launch its first go-to-market carbon negative carpet tile in 2020.
