Formed in a 1983 merger between two hospitals, Interfaith, with its 620 beds on two sites and its heavily-used emergency rooms, serves a half million people from some of the city's poorest neighborhoods.
In 1983, a bankrupt Brooklyn Jewish hospital was forced to merge with a failing St John's.
