But even these additions barely kept pace with upsurge in usage due, in part, to the area’s phenomenal growth and the advent of Medicare in 1965.

Mindful of future projections, PIH’s leadership launched the “Focus 70s” Campaign in 1967, a forward-looking plan to add medical-surgical beds, operating rooms, and the area’s first intensive coronary care unit.

By 1969, the PIH Foundation was created to target and oversee the hospital’s growing development activities, trusts, endowments and public outreach programs.

PIH Health acquired the assets of a major medical group in the Downey area in 1993 to help strengthen its managed care contracting efforts and expand its marketshare.

1994• InterHealth Canada Limited was established in Toronto, Ontario.

1997• Established the Kluaynamthai InterHealth Foot Care Clinic, the first Chiropody Clinic in Bangkok, Thailand as a joint venture.

1999• Awarded turnkey contract to manage and operate the 355 beds Shaikh Khalifa Medical Center in Abu Dhabi, the first tertiary care hospital in the United Arab Emirates.

2000• Started clinical operations at the Shaikh Khalifa Medical Center. • Developed the Health Systems Review Project for the General Authority for the Support and Development of Healthcare of Abu Dhabi, UAE. • Received the Canadian Business Council Award for Public-Private Partnership.

2003• Pre-qualified by the UK Government to participate in the Independent Sector Treatment Center (ISTC) bid process intended to reduce waiting times and provide additionality to the NHS.

2004• Awarded “Preferred Bidder Status” for the Independent Sector Treatment Center by the NHS in the UK.

2008• Awarded a 25-year PPP contract to finance, design, build, commission, operate and manage two new hospitals for the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a first of its kind project in the Caribbean.

2011• Awarded a 30-year PPP contract to finance, design, build, commission, operate and manage the New Żywiec Powiat Hospital in Poland; a first of its kind project in Central Europe. • Received US Joint Commission International Accreditation at the Rashid Hospital Trauma Center for the second time.

By 2012, DRMC emerged from financial reorganization and opened an advanced technology Catheterization Lab.

In 2013, PIH Health acquired Downey Regional Medical Center, which is now known as PIH Health Hospital- Downey.
