Intermountain Centers was founded in Tucson in 1973.
So in 1975 the church gave its hospitals to a new nonprofit entity called Intermountain Health Care.
In 1976 it teamed up with hospitals in other states to create Multihospital Mutual Insurance, Ltd. to provide liability coverage.
In cooperation with other nonprofit hospitals, IHC formed the Associated Hospital System (AHS) in 1978 to save money on joint purchases.
Such new and diverse programs led IHC in 1983 to reorganize as a parent company with five subsidiaries.
In 1985 the Utah Supreme Court ruled in Utah County v.
In 1986 more than 100,000 patient visits were recorded at these various smaller IHC facilities.
Thus in 1989 the company eliminated 20 management positions, a fairly typical move in the Information Age when middle management was becoming increasingly irrelevant.
National and international recognition of these innovative programs soon came. For example, in 1991 IHC received the Healthcare Forum/Witt Award for Commitment to Quality, similar to the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.
In 1993, a home-based therapeutic support program was established in the Tucson community, for the benefit of Native and non-Native children and their families.
In IHC's 1995 corporate history, Parker said, "Other hospital systems hadn't done it [consolidated their finances]. [The LDS Church] bit the bullet and said, 'The money is going to come centrally and we're going to bank it, invest it and control it centrally.' That's a big, big problem to get over.
After 20 years of operations, IHC by 1995 had provided more than $130 million in charitable care for patients.
After many years as Utah's main blood bank, in 1997 IHC ended that activity after having difficulty meeting the increasingly demanding requirements of the Food and Drug Administration.
According to the December 19, 1998 Salt Lake Tribune, this cooperative effort was "the first time in the United States such a venture has been initiated in a population within a single geographical area.
With the award of Angel House by Angel Charity for Children in Tucson in 1999, the Children’s Residential Program expanded to four facilities.
In the fall semester of 2013, Intermountain Academy expanded its program base to include children diagnosed with autism and moved its facility to a larger venue, a former public school in midtown Tucson.
The partnership, beginning in the Fall of 2018, will provide an Intermountain psychotherapist, special education teacher, and mental health support staff at Muldown year-round that will serve up to 12 kids at a time.
