Overview
Purpose Statement/Position Summary:
The Language and Cultural Specialist II (Spanish Interpreter), under general supervision, provide interpreting services in a culturally sensitive manner to facilitate communication and the relaying of medical information between speakers of different languages at CHLA; and provide written translations as required in patient encounters such as translation of medical instructions and medication schedules, and any hospital related administrative correspondence with patients/families, including information, education and documentation materials. Collaborates with other health care team members in the delivery of care. Complies with applicable office and hospital policies and procedures particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent. Also assists department with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff interpreters.
Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience:
* 2+ years' experience interpreting and translating in a healthcare setting, including experience working with the community and/or a target language population with a diversity of cultural/socio-economic backgrounds.
* Competency in written and verbal communication skills in English and the designated foreign language (Spanish).
* Ability to translate and interpretmedical terminology.
* Experience interpreting and translating with patients at a full range of developmental and educational levels.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related discipline preferred.
* Completion of a minimum of 40 hour Healthcare Interpreter training.
* For spoken language interpreters: Healthcare Interpreter National Certification or highest national credentialing (where applicable by language) through CCHI or a national organization.
* Translator Certification (where applicable by language) through ATA.
* 85% -90% Score for Language Proficiency from a vendor selected by CHLA.

USD $51,979.00 - USD $85,394.00

Extensive knowledge of code of ethics and standards of practice (IMIA, NBCMI and NCIHC).
HIPAA Training for Business Associates certificate (completed within the last year)
Proof of language proficiency via a medically based language assessment (LangStat, Reach Diversity, Language Testing Int'l)
Accredited MedicalInterpreting Training course (i.e.: ALTA, MITS, Bridging the Gap, MiTio, Cross-Cultural training, 40-hour accredited medical courses).
Preferred Qualifications
Degree or certifications in interpreting practices.
National MedicalInterpreter Certification by CCHI or NBCMI.
2 years of medicalinterpreting experience, within a hospital or clinical setting.
