Basic Function / Position Objective:
We are currently seeking a mentor for our Childhood program (kindergarten to 5th Grade) to serve as a positive adult role model to eight elementary children and develop loving, caring, and sustained relationships with each child. For each child, a Friend will set positive expectations; nurture and promote each child's strength, talents, and abilities; help ensure physical and emotional well-being; teach life and academic skills; provide enrichment activities; and model responsible behavior. A Friend will fully document activities and participate in the ongoing evaluation process. Friends will work primarily one-on-one with the children they serve, while also building trusting supportive relationships with parents/caregivers. A Friend must know, understand, honor, and support the organization's mission, vision, values, and principles, and be able to clearly articulate the organization's function.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
· Develop and sustain a long-term, caring, protective, and loving relationship with each child.
· Spend time with children, one-on-one.
· Partner with parents/caregivers to provide concrete and social emotional supports for the family.
· Set realistic expectations and goals based on each child's strengths, talents, abilities, and needs.
· Teach life skills and help develop a talent/skill/area of interest with each child.
· Deepen connections for youth through incorporating specific cultural knowledge in programming.
· Provide enrichment resources and activities that include opportunities for cultural identity development.
· Develop positive relationships with families, teachers, and others involved in each child's life.
· Reinforce basic academic skills.
· Maintain a 40-hour work schedule that includes afternoons, evenings, and weekends (normal working days are Tuesday through Saturday with Sundays and Mondays off).
· Maintain spending within budgetary guidelines.
· Complete, distribute, and collect time summaries, activity journals, short-term plans, expense reports, and evaluation materials accurately and in a timely manner.
· Attend and actively participate in team meetings and staff functions.
· Maintain First Aid/CPR certification.
· Transport children in a personal vehicle as required for mentoring activities.
· Provide information and support to the development and executive team on related activities.
· Fulfill other responsibilities as requested.
The ideal candidate will have the following Education, Experience, and Abilities:
· 2 or 4-year degree
· Alternatively, at least seven years' progressive experience working with children and families will be considered in lieu of a college degree
· Willingness to commit for a minimum of three years.
· Advocate to secure additional resources, opportunities, and services for youth as appropriate
· Assist with systems navigation in schools to secure conditions for optimal academic success
· Strong interpersonal skills
· Demonstrated ability to work with children in varied capacities and settings
· Ability to develop trusting relationships with children, families, teachers, and others involved in each child's life

Job Specific Working Conditions:
Rapid City Young Life has strong presence and history in the Rapid City and the Black Hills area. Rapid City Young Life started in 2000 and quickly grew impacting thousands of middle and high school kids in the area. It has become a thriving youth program in the area. Rapid City is a population of almost 100,000 people and with the surrounding Black Hills (over 250,000 people) live in the area. It is the home of Mt. Rushmore National Monument, Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park and Devil's Tower Monument. We have golfing, hiking, biking, boating, hunting, snow skiing, snowmobiling, fishing and so much more. Our weather would be comparable to the Denver area and we have over 300 days of sunshine every year.
Presently, there are vibrant ministries available for high school students across 3 high schools. We have 5 staff, 30 volunteer leaders, 18 vibrant committee members (many of whom helped launch Young Life 25 years ago in Rapid City), our own facility and a solid foundation of donors. We are excited to launch WyldLife, our ministry for middle-school kids and eager to see whom God will bring to lead this important outreach to middle school kids.
We desire a winsome Christ-follower who will not only invite potential leaders/committee/donors to partner with us but train and model out incarnational ministry. We are seeking someone who is called and committed to loving Jesus and reaching middle school kids with the Gospel. We are looking for someone who is humble, teachable and a self-starter. Someone who is compelled by the Holy Spirit to share the hope of Jesus with kids and have a desire to build a team of adults to do the same. The staff person will get the unique opportunity to step into leadership with a seasoned team of staff (our Area Director has been since the beginning and has some rich history and experience doing Young Life in this community) and leaders. As an Area Director, you are part of a national organization and work in partnership with local, area, divisional, regional, and national InterVarsity ministers and volunteers.
Participate in regional leadership as determined by the Regional Director, to set ministry vision and strategies, contribute to accomplishing plans, and provide regional leadership in specific areas
Positively and constructively respond to the direction and coaching of line supervisors
Build productive ministry partnerships with regional and national collaborative leaders
Establish systems, processes and protocols to fulfill regular operational and administrative tasks in a timely manner (reporting, finances, human resources, etc.)
Maintain sound financial status of the area through management of budgeting, expense control and ministry partnership development
Become familiar with and comply with all InterVarsity policies and procedures
4. Ministry Partnership Development (MPD)
As an Area Director, you will develop a team of partners who will resource the ministry financially, in prayer, or with volunteer service that advances the mission.
Develop and maintain a ministry among partners who will fund InterVarsity
Ensure ministry budget is fully funded
Supervise each minister's MPD (collaborating with coaches when applicable) and equip staff to build ministry partners
Build resource networks with alumni, volunteers, churches, advocacy councils, and major donors, in particular to fund low-network ministers
Communicate regularly with ministry partners
5. Accomplish all other assigned tasks as appropriate
QUALIFICATIONS
Annually affirm InterVarsity's Statement of Agreement (Doctrinal Basis and Purpose Statement). Abide by InterVarsity's Code of Conduct
Bachelor's degree required
Minimum three years campus ministry or equivalent work experience required
Strong ministry skills (including the ability to communicate spiritual vision, teach spiritual and biblical principles, plan ministry programs, and spiritually disciple, coach and mentor)
Proven ability to work well with others and the ability to develop a team of campus ministers.
Strong interpersonal skills (including ability to minister to diverse ethnic communities and faculty)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated problem solving skills
Familiarity with word processing, presentation, email, and spreadsheet software
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The AD position leads ministry in a college campus environment. A designated office space may or may not be available. The AD is required to travel to on-campus and off-campus sites as appropriate. Off-campus travel includes, but is not limited to student ministry conferences, MPD meetings, and InterVarsity-sponsored training sessions, meetings, and conferences. The AD is regularly required to communicate with others, and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
Pay Range: $55,200.00 - $73,608.00 per year
Pay: This position is funded through personal fundraising. Accordingly, compensation will vary based on the ability of the individual to secure a donor team to fund the cost of his/her salary. The anticipated salary range for this position on a full-time basis (40 hours/week) is dependent on a variety of factors, including location and cost of living. The actual salary received, including any geographic adjustment to account for location and cost of living, is subject to the individual's ability to raise funds necessary to cover the full amount of such salary within the range set forth in the job posting details.
