Andrew Aoki Ph.D.: Language skills--especially advanced language skills--are always valuable. You can learn a lot on the job, but it's very hard to learn a language. Even though English is becoming the lingua franca, there's an enormous benefit in communicating with people in their native tongue.
Andrew Aoki Ph.D.: Many employers value problem-solving skills. For those looking for international careers, this can require greater familiarity with other societies and cultures since a lack of cultural awareness can mean that problem-solving efforts aggravate the problem.
Andrew Aoki Ph.D.: Hard skill needs vary greatly, but digital skills are obviously valuable in many circumstances. Given the dizzying rate of development of new digital tools, the ability to learn new skills may be what's most important, which can be as much a soft skill as it is a hard skill. In some cases, old-fashioned quantitative skills are also valuable. The growing body of data available makes it more important than ever to analyze that information.
Andrew Aoki Ph.D.: Job markets change so fast that it's impossible to list specific skills that guarantee high incomes. That said, the evidence continues to show that STEM fields tend to be higher-paying. Of course, IR grads are less likely to have an extensive background in STEM. Still, it's possible to add complementary hard skills, e.g., a data science major, statistics classes, or other courses that help them learn widely used packages such as R. For those interested in corporate paths, accounting, marketing, or management classes can help add useful skills.
