JOB SUMMARY: This position reports to the Transportation Planner and assists the department with essential functions such as traffic counts, and traffic studies, along with bicycle, pedestrian, and transit-related work. This position also has the responsibility of educating the community on bicycle and pedestrian safety and promoting and evaluating the bikeways for maintenance and repairs. This is a great opportunity for students looking to gain hands-on experience in transportation planning and community engagement. The position is for the summer months from the middle of May through the middle of August and is based on a 35-hour work week that consists of Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Flexibility in the scheduling is required to account for staffing at other various events over the summer including occasional weekend and evening events. JOB DUTIES: 1. Manages the research and implementation of studies as directed by department staff. 2. Assists with traffic-related activities that may include but are not limited to performing traffic counts, monitoring traffic signals, and conducting traffic studies. 3. Inspects the over 95 miles of bike paths and lanes to evaluate the condition and maintenance needs of the system. Includes the inspection and reporting of regulatory signs that are faded, missing, or tilted, deteriorated bike paths or lanes, and tree or shrub obstructions encroaching into the bikeway riding area. Deficiencies will be reported to the appropriate department for maintenance, and a detailed daily log of completed activities will also be completed. 4. Educates the community on bicycle safety and bicycle traffic laws, assists with the administration of bicycle safety programs and events, and distributes bicycle maps and other bicycle-related information to various locations throughout the community. 5. Participates in various bike events over the summer such as bike to work day, Fahrrad tour von Schaumburg, walk/bike to school day events, national night out, Septemberfest, farmer's market, and the public library. At these events, staff responsibilities include handing out information on bicycle and pedestrian safety, distributing bicycle and transit maps, registering bicycles, and answering questions from the public. 6. Provides direct service to members, as indicated by the service plan, while supervised by an appropriate, designated staff person. Consistent with the intern's level of experience and training, this potentially includes but is not limited to individual counseling/therapy, case management, teaching, assessment, assertive community treatment, job support, managing medications, treatment planning, crisis intervention, and group counseling/therapy. This may be done in the community or on site at a Thresholds location, but the majority of services will be provided in the community unless otherwise specified by a supervisor. Completion of all assigned paperwork in a timely fashion, such as individual and group documentation, attendance reports, service plans and evaluations as assigned by the supervisor. Provide accurate and timely information to the supervisor on all topics and issues important to the rehabilitation and well-being of Thresholds members. Attend staff and team meetings as assigned by a supervisor. Maintain a professional demeanor with members, colleagues, and collateral contacts consistent with agency ethics and code of conduct guidelines. EDUCATION Enrolled in Bachelor's or Master's degree program with a major in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Vocational Counseling, Family Therapy, or other related human service programs. 1 st or 2 nd year Master's students preferred. EXPERIENCE Social service experience and/or experience working with individuals with mental illness preferred. Ability to synthesize and summarize information and make judgments regarding member care. Must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in order to provide information to members and healthcare personnel. Demonstrated ability to function independently. Computer skills required; knowledge of database functions and maintenance necessary.
