Gardens and Grounds Intern Purpose: The purpose of this position is to assist staff in Monticello's gardens, trails, and nursery operations while developing necessary horticultural and related skills that prepare the intern for the workforce. We will look to you to:
Assists with the maintenance of the flower, vegetable, fruit, and native gardens, as well as the Saunders-Monticello Trail and Center for Historic Plants on a rotating schedule.
Supports staff by helping with planting, watering, weeding, staking, edging, transplanting, harvesting seed and produce, fertilizing, sowing seeds, amending soil, labeling, mulching, pruning, moving potted plants cleaning and packaging seeds, assisting with garden tours and events, cleaning and organizing workspaces, etc.
Performs occasional ground maintenance activities, such as raking leaves, collecting branches, mowing turf grass, weed-eating, spreading mulch, removing trees, clearing out woodlands, maintaining shrubberies, operating power equipment, such as lawn mowers, rototillers, weed-eaters, etc.
Assists with public programming, including summer camps and the Historic Landscape Institute.
Assists with general maintenance, landscaping, Gardens and Grounds projects, and interdepartmental projects as assigned.
Skills and Abilities:
Basic understanding of horticultural and grounds maintenance principles, including plant identification and knowledge of garden plants, soils and fertilizers, weeds and their control, watering techniques, vegetable, fruit, and flower production, plant propagation, operating garden tools, etc.
Manual dexterity to safely and efficiently perform horticultural tasks such as seed sowing, seed collection, pruning and training plants, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, and spraying.
Ability to safely operate vehicles, hand tools and power equipment.
Strong communication skills and the ability to provide information to visitors and engage positively with colleagues.
Flexibility in adapting to changing or adverse circumstances.

Strength In Peers' Lion's PRIDE (Peer Recovery Internship for Development & Empowerment) program is a structured, hands-on learning experience for individuals who want to become a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist in Virginia. Interns complete 500 hours of supervised professional experience required to qualify for the certification exam. Through mentorship, real-world practice, and professional development, interns learn to engage peers with empathy, connect them to community resources, and model hope and resilience through lived experience.
Interns will rotate through Strength In Peers' peer-led recovery services, community resource centers, homeless medical respite house, jail-based support groups, and mobile harm reduction program to experience a variety of professional settings. Interns will also develop an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) where they will select trainings and experiences that align with their professional interests and goals, such as working in crisis services, supporting youth and families, or strengthening their computer skills.
At Strength In Peers, recovery grows in communityour pride. This program builds confidence, competence, and compassion on the path to becoming a CPRS and working in the helping professions.

$6,000 stipend over the 6-month program period, disbursed biweekly.

Job Description
Virginia Green is currently seeking paid Turf Management Interns in the following Virginia locations: Richmond, Midlothian, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, and Williamsburg. The ideal candidate is entering their junior or senior year and is an agriculture major. The intern can expect to be involved in all facets of the turf care industry: agronomy, spray application, aeration, logistics, equipment maintenance, and agricultural research.
Primary Responsibilities
• Work with Service Leaders and Regional Team Leaders to learn the products used and services provided by Virginia Green. Makes timely lawn and landscape applications using hand and powered equipment to apply fertilizer, insecticides, fungicides and herbicides.
• Work with Agronomists and Branch Manager to learn the concepts and skills necessary to become an agronomist with Virginia Green. You will learn how to provide Virginia Green's customers and associates with agronomic advice and support.
• Work with Technical and Quality Advisor to monitor the research farm and develop plans for plot substrates, seed blends (or sod), fertilizer applications, pesticide applications, watering, mowing, etc.
Required Qualifications / Attributes
• Be able to navigate a truck and trailer
• Must obtain a VDACS Registered Technician certification within 30 days of date of hire. Training and fees paid by Virginia Green
• Must be at least 18 years of age and a current college student
• Strong agronomic background in turf and ornamental care
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license
• Driving record must pass insurability test
Education and Experience
• Must be a current college student in good standing. Agriculture majors preferred.
Minimum Physical Requirements
• Walking, standing, bending, reaching, and twisting
• Able to lift 75 lbs.
• Repetitive use of hands
