The Environmental Scientist assists the Environmental Manager with execution of IPNM environmental compliance and permitting responsibilities for our Carlsbad, NM operations.
Assist with air and water quality monitoring, environmental compliance inspections, inspection/testing of environmental controls and proper control/disposal of hazardous materials
Assist IPNM Operations with implementation of best practice operational controls for environmental compliance
Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with regulatory personnel
Assist with obtaining and compiling all relevant environmental data, statistics and information required by management, government bodies and agencies
Maintain and submit various records related to permit requirements
Assist with preparation and review of permit documents
Assist with special projects
Other duties as required
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Driver's License
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field required
2 years or more of related environmental experience
Must be proficient in reading, analyzing and interpreting scientific data and information

Possess and apply project management skills to multiple projects pertaining to groundwater operations, reclamation, and decommissioning is required
Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles pertaining to tailings storage facilities monitoring and maintenance is a plus
Knowledge of process engineering principles pertaining to water treatment plant operations and maintenance is a plus
Willingness to work during non-work hours should upset conditions occur at the site is required
Have a demonstrated ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team of peers and junior site personnel, while maintaining effective working relationships with other personnel and/or consultants/contractors is preferred
Excellent communication skills, both orally and written, with both internal and external contacts and the ability to work with all levels of the organization required
Knowledge of regulatory constraints related to radioactive material and activities is a plus

Coordinate and perform groundwater monitoring activities associated with reclamation activities, including sample collection, shipping, and data management.

Assist other personnel in achieving site objectives.
Responsible for after hours on-call response to environmental and/or operational incidents, as needed.

Position involves extensive fieldwork and requires the ability to regularly walk over uneven, sloped, rocky, wet or icy ground and the ability to lift 50 or more pounds consistently and safely.
Receiving at least 4 weeks of generalized training (up to 2 weeks may be on the-job training) in radiation health protection applicable to UR facilities in the year to become a qualified Radiation Safety Technician (RST) and assume those duties as overseen by the ARSO.
Management and implementation of Radiation Protection Plan (RPP), including performing radiological surveys, inspections, assist with audits, evaluate work for potential exposure circumstances, and proper record keeping
Prepare and present information in Safety Meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Hydrology, Ecology or related field required
