Scottish American was set up in 1873 and funded the construction of the railways which helped bring together the United States of America.
In 1873, Robert Fleming launched the Scottish American Investment Trust (now called Dunedin Income Growth) to finance the building of the railway network which would ultimately link the United States of America.
Alliance Trust, launched in 1888, was originally founded as a mortgage bank, raising capital from British investors and lending it to pioneer farmers in the north western United States.
James Budden, director of retail marketing and distribution at Baillie Gifford, points out: “Baillie Gifford’s founders launched the Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust in 1909.
