Dr. Andersen sets Ipas’ strategic technical direction and research agenda in support of the organizational strategic plan and mission. She leads Ipas’s work to understand and advance key issues in abortion and contraception care; such as increasing evidence for women’s self-use of medical abortion, measuring abortion quality, as well as abortion care for women experiencing gender-based violence and women in humanitarian settings. Her teams develop and implement strategies that build evidence to strengthen Ipas’s impact and ultimately, to increase women’s and girls’ access to safe abortion. During her 14-year tenure at Ipas, Dr. Andersen previously managed significant research activities at Ipas and provided technical support and guidance to researchers across the organization. She has extensive experience in research, monitoring, and evaluation of Ipas programs across south Asia and Africa. She also serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and as Consulting Editor for Research Methods for the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health.

Muadi Mukenge

Ms. Mukenge provides strategic direction for fundraising, partnership development and global communications at Ipas. A dedicated advocate for reproductive health and rights, she is a respected thought leader on political and development trends. Originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ms. Mukenge has more than 21 years of leadership experience in international philanthropy, communications and development.

Ms. Mukenge spent five years at the Pacific Institute for Women’s Health, where she managed an initiative on communications strategies for African women’s nonprofits. Also during her tenure, she managed research for a community-based initiative to prevent unintended pregnancies and maternal mortality and to increase access to post-abortion care in Western Kenya. Most recently, Ms. Mukenge oversaw grantmaking, special initiatives, and resource mobilization for Sub-Saharan Africa for the Global Fund for Women from 2004 to 2016, growing its work most significantly in rural communities, conflict regions, and Francophone Africa. She is a thought leader who contributes expertise in the fields of maternal and adolescent health, economic empowerment, HIV/AIDS, and ending violence against women. Ms. Mukenge has coordinated evaluation processes and projects and has substantive experience in fundraising, donor reporting, and donor engagement. She has authored impact reports, articles, and book chapters on women’s rights, African development, and global health. Ms. Mukenge is a former Board member of the African Studies Association and New Field Foundation.

She has a master’s degree in African Studies from the University of California at Los Angeles and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Davidson College.
