Gordon van Welie has been actively involved since 2000 in the establishment and growth of advanced wholesale electricity markets and a robust regional system planning process in the New England region. More recently, he has directed ISO initiatives to address the interdependency between the gas and electric systems, facilitate renewable power integration, and pursue ''smart grid'' technology applications. Prior to joining ISO New England, Mr. van Welie was the vice president and general manager of the power system control business for Siemens, which supplies energy and distribution management systems to electric utilities. He has also worked in a variety of positions in the field of energy management and substation automation in Eskom, a vertically integrated utility in South Africa. Mr. van Welie is a member of several entities, including ISO New England's board of directors, the executive committee of the U.S. National Committee of CIGRE, the Independent System Operators/Regional Transmission Organizations (ISO/RTO) Council, and the Electricity Advisory Committee—a group that advises the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability. Mr. van Welie has an M.B.A. and a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
