  • Software Engineering Lead, Infrastructure

    Kaizen Labs 4.0company rating

    New York, NY job

Who Are We? Have you struggled to reserve that coveted summer camping spot at a state park? Wondered why you're still filling out a paper form at the DMV? Or tried (and failed) to book your favorite pickleball court from your phone? Kaizen Labs is rebuilding the government's digital front door - bringing modern, people-first software to the public services millions of Americans rely on every day. From parks & recreation and permitting to licensing and payments, we're replacing outdated systems with intuitive, beautiful technology designed for residents and the public servants who serve them. Our platform now powers over 50 agencies across 17 states, reaching more than 30 million residents. Recent partners include Maricopa County (AZ), San Bernardino County (CA), and the Cherokee Nation. In Maryland, our platform helped eliminate seven-mile traffic jams at state parks, saving hundreds of thousands in costs and dramatically improving the visitor experience. Founded in 2022 and based in New York City, Kaizen has raised $35 million from world-class investors, including NEA, Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, 776, and Carpenter Capital. We're a team of builders, designers, and operators redefining what it means to serve the public in the digital age - and we're just getting started. Location This is a hybrid role based out of our New York City HQ. Candidates must reside in New York or be able to commute to New York City to work out of our office at least three times a week (Tuesdays - Thursdays). The Role As our Infrastructure Lead, you'll be laying the foundation for this mission - building the systems that ensure our platform is scalable, reliable, and compliant. You'll be the person who takes us from a scrappy early-stage setup to infrastructure that can power thousands of municipalities across the country. If you're excited about building modern infrastructure from the ground up and making a real-world impact, this role is for you. You will be responsible for building and owning the infrastructure that underpins our platform - scaling, load testing, developer tooling, monitoring, and hosting support for customer environments (including high-compliance environments). This is a highly technical role with leadership responsibility: ~80% hands-on engineering and ~20% people management. You'll collaborate closely with product teams to design robust developer tooling, consolidate our cloud footprint, and ensure our platform is reliable, secure, and ready to scale. Technical Challenges Unique to This Role… Building a modern infrastructure foundation from 0→1, starting at cloud provider setup, Terraform, Docker, and Kubernetes (not yet in place). Scaling and load testing our systems as we expand to serve larger municipalities and compliance-heavy customers. Owning observability and monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog, Sentry) to provide meaningful metrics, dashboards, and alerting. Supporting isolated hosting environments for compliance requirements. Creating developer tooling and CI/CD pipelines that enable fast, reliable, and safe deployments. What You'll Do Build and execute the infrastructure roadmap, defining priorities and driving adoption. Own and consolidate our cloud footprint. Manage infrastructure and observability tools (Datadog, Sentry, etc.) and expand their effectiveness. Collaborate with product engineers to build scalable dev tooling and CI/CD pipelines. Lead and mentor a small team while remaining a strong IC. Ensure compliance-ready infrastructure for government and other highly regulated environments. Make high-level architectural decisions to evolve our platform from early-stage infrastructure into enterprise-grade operations. What You'll Bring 6+ years of infrastructure or DevOps engineering experience. Proven experience building 0→1 cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP strongly preferred). Proficiency with Terraform, Docker, and Kubernetes (or equivalent cloud-native tools). Experience in high-compliance environments (government, healthcare, finance, or public companies). Strong background in observability and monitoring (Datadog, Sentry, or similar). Comfortable leading projects and/or teams, or owning complex infrastructure initiatives. A “builder” mentality: you've walked into messy infra setups and transformed them into scalable, reliable systems. Familiar with (or excited to learn about) integrating AI-assisted coding and problem-solving tools into everyday development. Strong Candidates May Also... Prior experience at an early-stage company where you were the first infra hire or helped scale a small infra team. Familiarity with multi-cloud or hybrid cloud strategies. Tandem 4.8company rating

    New York, NY job

Why you should join us Tandem is a generational opportunity to rethink how we bring new therapies to market, and our path to doing so is significantly de-risked - we have: Exponential organic growth: We have product-market fit and are growing rapidly through word-of-mouth. Tandem supports thousands of patients every day, is doubling doctor users every quarter, and is working with the largest biopharma companies in the world. An AI-first business model: Our approach is distinctly enabled by AI, but our business will get stronger (not commoditized) as foundation models improve. We are building durability through two-sided network effects that will compound over time. Top tier investors: With the traction to support conviction in our model, we raised significant funding from investors (Thrive Capital and General Catalyst) to build an exceptional team of engineers and operators. Our number one priority is scaling to market demand. We are looking for individuals who are high horsepower, high throughput, and hyper resourceful to help us increase capacity and grow. We move fast and need to move faster. All full-time roles are in person in New York. You can learn more about working with us in the last section of this page. About the role As an Infrastructure Engineer at Tandem, you'll be our first dedicated hire focused on infrastructure and developer experience. You'll own and evolve the core systems that make our engineering team faster, our platform more reliable, and our company more scalable. This role sits at the foundation of everything we build - from AI product development to partner integrations to high-stakes, high-throughput operations. You'll have the opportunity to define our foundational infra practices - from CI/CD to observability to cloud architecture - and set the tone for how we scale. You'll work across infrastructure, DevOps, and developer productivity, building systems that let us move fast without compromising stability or clarity. This is a demanding role, with a high level of autonomy and responsibility. You will be expected to "act like an owner" and commit yourself to Tandem's success. If you are low-ego, hungry to learn, and excited about intense, impactful work that drives both company growth and accelerated career progression, we want to hear from you. If you join, you will: Design and evolve CI/CD pipelines to improve speed, safety, and developer experience Scale and maintain core infrastructure - including Kubernetes clusters, PostgreSQL databases, ephemeral browsers, and data replication workflows Build and own our monitoring, alerting, and observability systems to ensure platform reliability and uptime Integrate AI-powered development tools to streamline engineering workflows Analyze and control cloud infrastructure spend while maintaining performance and reliability Improve internal tooling and developer environments to unblock execution at every layer Partner with engineering and product teams to anticipate scaling challenges and harden critical systems We'll be most excited if you: Experience in infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE roles at fast-moving, product-driven tech companies Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (we use AWS; GCP and Azure are nice to have) Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tooling (Terraform preferred) Deep familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) Experience with observability and monitoring systems (e.g., Grafana, Datadog) Proven ability to design and improve CI/CD pipelines (we use GitHub Actions) High NPS with your former teammates This is a list of ideal qualifications for this position. If you don't meet every single one of them, you should still consider applying! We're excited to work with people from underrepresented backgrounds, and we encourage people from all backgrounds to apply. Working with us Tandem is based in New York, with our full team working out of a beautiful and spacious office in SoHo. We run as a high-trust environment with high autonomy, which requires that everyone is fully competent and operates in line with our principles: Commit to audacity. "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right.” Do the math. Be rigorous, assume nothing. Find the shortest path. Use hacks, favors, and backdoors. Only take a longer road on purpose. Spit it out. Be direct, invite critique, avoid equivocation - we want right answers. Be demanding and supportive. Expect excellence from everyone and offer help to achieve it. Do what it takes to be number 1. We work hard to make sure we win. We provide competitive compensation with meaningful equity (for full-time employees). Everyone who joins early will be a major contributor to our success, and we reflect this through ownership and pay. We also provide rich benefits to ensure you can focus on creating impact (for full-time employees): Fully covered medical, vision, and dental insurance. Memberships for One Medical, Talkspace, Teladoc, and Kindbody. Unlimited paid time off (PTO) and 16 weeks of parental leave. 401K plan setup, FSA option, commuter benefits, and DashPass. Lunch at the office every day and Dinner at the office after 7 pm. Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our company's size and industry, and are one part of the total compensation package that also includes equity, benefits, and other opportunities at Tandem (for full-time employees). Individual pay decisions are ultimately based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, geography, and balancing internal equity. Tandem is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, national origin, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy or related condition, or any other basis protected by law.
