1891: Indiana University offers first classes in Indianapolis
1914: Long Hospital opens and the Indiana University Training School for Nurses is founded
1916: First extension office for Indiana University opens in Indianapolis

That’s why community leaders in Columbus, Ind. worked through the Columbus Chamber of Commerce to create the Columbus Community College (CCC) in 1968.
Columbus leaders persisted, and finally, in mid-1969, IU and Purdue leadership finally agreed to take Columbus on.
In August 1970, the creation of the “Columbus Center of IUPUI” was announced.

IUPUC (Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus) was founded in 1970 to serve the post-secondary education needs of citizens and industry in south central Indiana.
The Columbus Board of Aviation Commissioner, on behalf of the city, received the deed to the 2,000-acre air base in 1971, with the proviso that all income received from the property be used to support aviation.
Late in 1971, the two-person staff of the Columbus Center was permitted to relocate into an unused WWII-era building on the Bakalar site.
1971: Undergraduate campus, consisting of Cavanaugh Hall, Lecture Hall, and University Library opens
1972: IU School of Public & Environmental Affairs, IU School of Liberal Arts, Purdue School of Science, and Purdue School of Engineering and Technology are established
The five-year lease signed in 1973 called for annual payments of $50,000, nearly all of which were used to update the mechanical and electrical components of the former military building.
1973: Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. is named second chancellor of IUPUI
The new location was open for classes in spring 1974.
1975: The Engineering and Technology Building is completed and the School of Continuing Studies is established
In 1984, the Indiana General Assembly appropriated $2.5 million for the construction of science and technology labs and a new exterior for the IUPUC building.
The Indiana University Trustees approved a $3.55 million expansion and renovation at IUPUC. The renovation was completed in 1985, resulting in an expansion of more than 60 percent compared to the pre-renovation square footage.
1986: Gerald L. Bepko, Ph.D., is named third chancellor of IUPUI
An additional 11 acres of land was deeded to the Indiana University Board of Trustees by the City of Columbus in 1987.
1999: IU Cancer Center receives national cancer center research designation
2004: Informatics & Communications Technology Complex is dedicated
2012: The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy—the first such school in the world—is established
2015: Nasser H. Paydar, Ph.D., is named fifth chancellor of IUPUI
