Formerly known as Indiana Vocational Technical College, the Ivy Tech College was founded in 1963 to provide vocational and technical education.
After the death of Governor Frank O’Bannon in 2003, the Bloomington campus decided to name the annual event for him to commemorate his years of public service, his dedication to education, and particularly his legacy of Indiana’s community college system.
The partnership ended in 2005 and Ivy Tech was re-chartered as a system of community colleges and renamed Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.

In 2019, after an influential 15-year run of the event that instilled the importance of service to one’s community, the campus began no longer hosting prominent fundraising dinner speakers.
In 2019, Ivy Tech entered into a partnership with the University of Virginia which will allow Ivy Tech undergraduates to complete their four-year degrees online at that university.
