Izmir company history timeline

1800

Hellenes and the settlers of Bayraklı Mound eliminated this prefix and called the city as “Smurna”. Most probably the city was known between the years 3000 and 1800 BC as “Smurnu”.

During Hittites Period (1800 BC – 1200 BC) writing was used in Anatolia, hence historical ages were reached.

1801

In 1801, the Ottomans gave their permission for construction of the synagogues to begin.

1860

The Alliance was originally founded in 1860, with the hopes of improving the education of Ottoman Jewry.

1867

In 1867, İzmir finally became the center of its own vilayet, still called by neighboring Aydın's name but with its own administrative area covering a large part of Turkey's present-day Aegean Region.

1873

In 1873, the European organization, Alliance Israelite Universelle, established a Jewish school for boys, and five years later, the Alliance founded a Jewish school for girls.

1905

But due to the worsening economic situation in the Ottoman Empire, a mass migration of Jews from Izmir took place in the early 20th century, mainly to the Americas, Western Europe, and Israel, which brought the population down to 25,000 by 1905.

1908

But after the Young Turks revolt of 1908, Jews and Christians alike began to be drafted into the Ottoman army and many Jewish families were beset by poverty and unemployment during this time, as the main breadwinners of the family were hauled off to war.

1919

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the city was a favorite destination of French, British, Dutch and Italian merchants. İzmir, a multinational trade city in the Ottoman Empire, was occupied by the Greek army on May 15, 1919 after the First World War.

On 15 May 1919, the Greek Army landed in Smyrna, but the Greek expedition towards central Anatolia was disastrous for both that country and for the local Greeks of Anatolia.

1922

By September 1922 the Greek army had been defeated and was in full retreat, the last Greek soldiers leaving Smyrna on 8 September 1922.

These include the lynching of the Orthodox Metropolitan Chrysostomos following the recapture of the city on 9 September 1922 and the slaughter of Armenian and Greek males, who were then sent to the so-called labour battalions.

1923

With the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923, many Jews chose to emigrate.

The remaining Greeks left for Greece in 1923, as part of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, a stipulation of the Treaty of Lausanne, which formally ended the Greco-Turkish War.

The city was, once again, gradually rebuilt after the proclamation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

1928

The new building, which is now classified as a historic monument, was officially opened in 1928.

1936

In this congress, the idea of ​​"fair" was first put forward and adopted by Atatürk and the foundations of the International Fair were laid in 1936.

1955

The region, which was populated with slums after 1955, is hosting İzmir Mound, the first known settlement in İzmir.

1960

Towards the end of 1960, 220 large firms, 11 of which belong to the state sector and 209 to the private sector, operate in various manufacturing branches in İzmir.

1966

2000

2004

The 2004 discovery of Yeşilova Höyük and the neighboring Yassıtepe, in the small delta of Meles River, now the Bornova plain, reset the starting date of the city's past further back than previously thought.

2005

In 2005, TEB entered into partnership with the BNP Paribas Group.

2013

In 2013, the passing of Act 6360 established all thirty of İzmir Province's districts as part of İzmir's metropolitan area.

2020

In 2020, the city was damaged by the Aegean Sea earthquake and tsunami, which was the deadliest seismic event in that year.
