With a private act of the Tennessee Legislature, the Water, Natural Gas and Electricity utilities combined in 1959, becoming the City-owned Jackson Utility Division.
Established by the City of Jacksonville in 1895, JEA owns, operates and manages the electric system. It grew from a department of city government to an independent authority created by the consolidation of city and county governments in 1967.
To reflect the growth and development, the name of the cooperative was chnaged to Jackson Energy Cooperative in June 1997.
In March 1998, Jackson Energy was among the first cooperatives in the country to become a Touchstone Energy Partner, a national branding program promoting local electric cooperatives.
The telecommunications network, called EPlus Broadband, launched in 2004.
First Jackson service to offer 6 Mbps residential service (2004) and to expand through 10 Mbps, 25 Mbps, to 75 Mbps and then to next-generation 1 Gbps.
