Jacobi Medical Center Company History Timeline

1949
In 1949, a 64-acre 260,000 m parcel was purchased by the New York City Department of Hospitals to establish a tertiary care facility and teaching hospital with a campus-like health care environment one which would be located well away from urban congestion, traffic noise and fumes.
1950
The aerial photograph above was taken in the mid 1950 s and shows the AECOM and BMHC campuses from the south.
1954
Following several years of construction, Van Etten Hospital opened in September 1954 with 500 beds, named in honor of Doctor Nathan B. Van Etten, a well-known Bronx practitioner with deep concern for the sick poor.
1960
In the 1960s, surgeons at Jacobi performed the world's first successful clinical coronary artery bypass surgery on May 2, 1960, Robert H. Goetz performed a right internal thoracic artery-to-right coronary artery anastomosis using a tantalum ring in a 38-year-old man.
1966
Until the Weiler Hospital opened in 1966, all of the Department of Medicine at the AECOM s Internal Medicine residency training took place on the general Medical Service at Jacobi Hospital and on the Chest and Metabolic Research Services in Van Etten Hospital.
1986
In 1986, Carol Harris and her colleagues in the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome AIDS program at Jacobi, attracted a gift of four million dollars from Mrs.
1993
After almost 40 years of heading the Jacobi medical service and its residency program, Milford Fulop stepped down from that role in 1993.
1998
In 1998, the Department was renamed to honor Lewis M. Fraad, a role model and leader for generations of graduates.
2005
In winter 2005, Jacobi opened a new 344-bed tertiary care facility.
2008
The clinic is housed in a new four-story outpatient pavilion, which opened in 2008.
2009
Doctor Nordin stepped down in 2009, and was followed by Doctor Stephan Kamholz, who has formerly served as the Chair of Medicine at LIJ-North Shore, and as Chair of Medicine, State University of New York Downstate.
2015
Doctor Fulop sadly passed away November, 26, 2015.
