Grace Church was the official government church and during the Revolutionary War the area was occupied by British troops (1776-1783) whose huts were in the foothills north of Hillside Avenue.Jamaica (Jameco being the Algonquin word for Beaver) was incorporated in 1814.
In 1857, the West Roxbury laid tracks that stretched from the intersection of South and Jamaica Streets along Centre to Tremont Street.
On September 1, 1897 the Tremont Street subway was opened with new electric streetcars.
The tracks connecting the current Arborway Yard to Jamaica Plain car house on South and Jamaica were finished in 1902.
