James Avery Artisan Jewelry company history timeline

1954

In the summer of 1954, James Avery started his jewelry business in a two-car garage with about $250 in capital.

Avery began fabricating jewelry in his in-laws’ garage in Kerrville in 1954, and he quickly found success selling his products through churches on consignment.

1954: James Avery begins crafting jewelry in a Texas garage.

1957

Just a few years later in 1957, he mailed his first Christian jewelry catalog.

It wa s also in 1957 that Avery hired his first employee, Fred Garcia, and produced his first catalog, 16 pages long, offering 39 items.

1970

As an example of how disorganized the company was, when he took over James Avery Craftsman the company was still filling 1970's Christmas orders.

1971

Avery found it in Chuck W olfmueller, a Kerrville native who in 1971 was working on his master' s degree in business at the University of Texas.

Stephen, w ho was 19, suffered from schizophrenia that began manifesting itself shortly after his father left home in 1971."

1973

He opened his first store in Dallas in 1973, with locations in Houston and San Antonio following soon after.

The first retail store was established in Kerrville, TX in 1973.

1979

Sal ly then sold back her share of the company in 1979, a year after trag edy struck the family.

1980

1980: The catalog sales division is launched.

1988

1988: The first retail store opens in Georgia.

1990

Wolfmueller's lawsuit went to trial in 1990.

1994

1994: Specialty Charm catalog is introduced.

2001

Another workshop opened in 2001, this one located in Hondo, Texas.

2003

2003: A web site is launched.

2004

Additionally, Paul Avery has been Director of James Avery Craftsman since 2004 and also serves as its Executive Vice President.

2005

2005: The first Colorado store opens.

2012

He started designing jewelry shortly after marrying for a second time, and by the end of his life religious items like crosses and chalices made up approximately 20 percent of his company’s output, The San Antonio Express-News reported in a 2012 profile of him.
