James McHugh Construction Co. company history timeline
McHugh was founded in 1897 by James D. McHugh, an Irish bricklayer from the South Side of Chicago.
In response to this demand, McHugh built additions to Cook County Hospital and a residence hall for Rush-Presbyterian St Luke's Medical Center in 1955.
Away from the office, McHugh was a serious sailor who won two trophies in the 1962 Chicago-Mackinac race with his boat Inferno.

They point to a 1969 lawsuit, in which both Brighton and McHugh are named as defendants, as the most compelling evidence.
In 1977, at the age of 53, Thomas Bowler was convicted for his role in a bid-rigging scheme on the $45 million Stevenson Expressway construction project.

From there, McHugh Construction took off and played a role in some of the biggest projects in Chicago and beyond, including rebuilding the Arlington International Racecourse's grandstand after it was destroyed in a 1985 fire.
Though many projects are located in the Chicago area today, McHugh was the first American contractor to open an office in Moscow after the revolutions of 1989 and today has projects around the country.
Brighton was general contractor “in name only,” said the project manager in 2010 and Thomas Bowler, according to Clarence Ekstrom, “had nothing to do with the project.”
After the passing of her father in August 2016, the founder's great grand daughter, Patty McHugh, became chairwoman of the firm.
“My father’s workers did iron work, carpentry, and cement work,” recalled Schrager in 2016. “They were the laborers that Jack McHugh needed.”
