Job Summary Under the direction of the Underwriting Manager or Division Manager the Associate Underwriter will learn how to review and analyze underwriting data in order to determine if risks meet corporate underwriting standards, calculate appropriate premium, determine proper terms for acceptable risks and respond to brokers when particular risks do not meet underwriting guidelines. Associate Underwriters are also responsible for developing and maintaining profitable business relationships with brokers. Duties and Responsibilities * Continuously exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication and Teamwork, Innovation and Customer Service * Increase knowledge of key insurance concepts through on the job training, assigned manuals and self- study * Successfully learn and begin to review submissions, analyze and document key exposures, price accounts and complete worksheets. * Accept, modify or reject risks * Attain premium, loss ratio and service goals as assigned * Complete policy maintenance requirements * Check issued policies for accuracy * Review upcoming renewal applications, and prior year renewal files, to ensure risk still meets underwriting requirements. Prepare renewal files for quoting. * Begin to build and develop relationships with key wholesale broker clients * Dependent upon performance the Associate Underwriter will travel at least 3 times with per year with an experienced Underwriter to meet with brokers. * Other duties as required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Aptitude for learning how to effectively assess risk * Must be able to pursue a professional designation or BISYS coursework within the first year of employment. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Ability to work independently or in a team environment to complete assignments within the parameters of instructions given prescribed processes and standard accepted underwriting practices * Problem solving and decision-making skills * Strong negotiation skills * Ability to multi-task * High level of initiative and motivation * Strong work ethic with a drive to succeed * Solid customer service and relationship building skills * Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Internet researching Underwriter Experience and Education * Bachelor's Degree or a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience * Industry associated classes or courses preferred. The Personal Lines Underwriter is responsible for the underwriting of a book of business, utilizing sound judgment and discretion as well as relying on underwriting policies and guidelines, rating, rules and insurance laws and regulations. Ensure delivery, follow-up and servicing requirements of all new business and renewal accounts. This position will work a hybrid schedule in our Houston Office or Remotely in the Region. Responsibilities • Perform risk selection and analysis. Examine and evaluate documents such as application forms, inspections reports, financial reports, product brochures, company referral agreements, and other pertinent documents to determine the degree of risk, underwriting and market selection. • Day to day responsibility for reviewing customer web activity to spot trends positive and negative and addressing these trends immediately. • Accept, reject, classify, price and bind insurance risks within granted underwriting authority. Also broker/recommend to company underwriters beyond any authority grants. Prepare submissions for rating and handling by the support staff. Effectively market and negotiate with brokers and insurance companies on individual accounts. Effective and timely communication to pursue opportunities. • Effectively communicate with agent or broker clients, company underwriters, internal staff and management to obtain additional information, quote rates, present proposals, explain company underwriting policies and coverage offerings, as well as servicing existing accounts. • Address assigned workload within quality, productivity and service standards as established by the company/underwriting guidelines. • Establish a relationship with the principal and/or key contacts and ensure we are doing business with the “right people”. • Assist marketing department, staff and other internal departments in resolving problems and questions. Assist in the development and implementation of new marketing strategies. • Appropriate and timely response to questions posed by brokers, clients, underwriters and other company personnel. • Visit brokers and/or company clients to enhance relationships and improve production opportunities up to and including attending trade conventions. • Secure company/agency production, retention, and growth goals. Requirements • Preferably 3+ years in E&S insurance • Underwriting Binding, MGA, or Brokerage experience a plus • Carrier underwriting background a plus Want the opportunity to build something new? Professional designations (CPCU, AU, ETC.) are a plus * Experience working with wholesale brokers preferred * Efficiently plan/manage agency visits and travel time will be essential * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required; The ability to market Penn-America products to agents is essential * Excellent analytical skills required * Excellent organizational and time management skills required * The ability to work collaboratively in a team with other underwriters will be needed * Insurance rating experience is plus * Strong computer skills are a necessity.
