Its blend of Southern California lifestyle coupled with a hint of East Coast tradition and Midwest grit creates a truly distinct point of view within the lifestyle apparel industry. Johnnie-O is a unique lifestyle apparel brand providing classic, casual pieces for men and boys. The Johnnie-O brand is both a personality and an experience that can be described as fun, fresh, tongue-in-cheek, accessible, active, and family-oriented.
Johnnie-O is a fast-growing multi-channel apparel company. We seek to attract highly motivated individuals who want to work as a team and share in the commitment, responsibility, and discipline required to achieve our vision. Our management philosophy is based on responsibility and mutual respect. We are a fun and dynamic bunch motivated to take the company to the next level. Our employees are smart, creative, and passionate individuals who meet the same superior standards we set for our products. We embrace talented people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. It is our goal to hire high-energy, bright, creative, and flexible individuals who thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
The Role
Johnnie-O is looking for an outstanding BI Engineer II (Power BI) to join our data team. This role is dedicated to Power BI: building high-quality, presentable reports and dashboards, owning our PBI semantic models, and establishing scalable governance around DAX, model design, permissions, and distribution.
You'll partner closely with our Analytics Engineers to ensure our DBT “gold” datasets are translated into a best-in-class Power BI experience. You will also work directly with business stakeholders across Retail, Operations, Marketing, Customer Service, Accounting, and eCommerce to deliver trusted reporting, consistent definitions, and a self-service BI foundation that scales. This role is ideal for someone who knows that data's value isn't in its existence but in its adoption-and who takes ownership of turning complex metrics into a trusted semantic layer and shared language that teams can actually use.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Power BI Semantic Models
• Own, build, and maintain Power BI semantic models used across departments.
• Design robust tabular models using expert modeling practices: (star schema, conformed dimensions, indexes, date tables, etc.).
• Enforce clean relationship design: one-to-many, single-direction by default.
• Build a governed semantic layer that scales: curated field list, consistent naming, consistent formatting, and measure-first design.
• Establish naming standards (measures, tables, and columns) so metrics are discoverable and reusable (clear measure names, consistent prefixes, standardized time-intelligence naming).
• Use Tabular Editor to manage model metadata at apply/maintain Best Practice Analyzer (BPA) rules across models and environments.
DAX Excellence & Model Performance
• Write, review, and optimize DAX for correctness and performance.
• Proactively optimize VertiPaq performance: ensure model design supports compression and fast scans.
• Drive performance investigations using the right tooling and workflow: Power BI Performance Analyzer, DAX Studio, VertiPaq Analyzer, and targeted model/DAX refactors.
• Own refresh and model scalability strategies (incremental refresh, query folding awareness, and refresh SLA management) in partnership with the data team.
Reporting & UX / Presentation Quality
• Build reports that are visually pleasing & operationally usable: clear information hierarchy, intuitive navigation, and visuals that answer real business questions (not just “show data”).
• Promote sustainable report architecture using thin-reports, reducing metric drift and simplifying maintenance.
• Establish reusable templates and interaction standards (tooltips, drill through, bookmarks where needed, consistent layouts) so reporting feels cohesive and professional across the organization.
• Design for self-service: reports that guide users toward the right interpretation via curated measures, consistent definitions, and intentional UX.
Power BI Governance, Permissions, and Distribution
• Own workspace strategy and lifecycle: environment separation (dev/test/prod), controlled release practices, and disciplined change management for shared datasets.
• Implement and maintain security correctly at scale: RLS/OLS aligned with business governance.
• Drive semantic model governance: dataset certification/endorsement strategy, usage monitoring, clear ownership, and versioning practices that protect company-wide trust in metrics.
• Establish operational standards for reliability: refresh monitoring, failure triage, stakeholder communication, and documented runbooks for critical reporting assets.
Partnership with Analytics Engineers
• Partner with Analytics Engineers to ensure DBT marts (tables) are PBI ready.
• Provide strong feedback loops upstream when model design choices create BI complexity.
• Help enforce a consistent source of truth & ubiquitous language across DBT and Power BI-aligned naming, aligned definitions, and minimized metric drift across domains.
Documentation & Enablement
• Own and maintain a governed data dictionary for each “gold” semantic model (metric definitions, DAX logic, grain, refresh cadence, known caveats, and ownership).
• Lead Power BI adoption through practical enablement: documentation, office hours, training sessions, and “gold path” guidance that teaches teams how to use the semantic layers correctly and consistently.
• Act as a primary point of contact for end users-answering questions, resolving confusion around metrics, and guiding stakeholders to the right datasets/measures.
• Coach business users on effective Power BI and Excel usage.
Location / Reporting
• Location: Raleigh, NC
• Position: Full Time
• Reports To: Analytics Engineering Manager
• Close Partnerships: Analytics Engineer (Retail & Operations); Analytics Engineer (Marketing & eCommerce); Retail Leadership; Operations Leadership; Marketing; eCommerce
Skills/Qualifications
• 3+ years of hands-on Power BI experience building and maintaining production dashboards and semantic models.
• Experience establishing consistent metric definitions and a shared business language through a governed semantic layer.
• Expert in DAX (measure design, evaluation context, time intelligence, performance)
• Strong Power BI modeling skills (star schema, relationships, cardinality, etc.).
• Deep familiarity with Power BI permissions and governance (workspaces, apps, audiences, RLS, OLS, sharing).
• Strong experience maintaining shared semantic models used across multiple teams and reporting surfaces.
• Experience with Power BI operational best practices (refresh strategy, incremental refresh, dataset performance tuning).
• Familiarity with Tabular Editor (measure management, calculation groups, BPA, OLS, etc.).
• Working proficiency in SQL and comfort validating logic against a modern data warehouse (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery).
• Strong communication skills-able to translate business questions into well-modeled semantic logic and clear reporting.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively across functional teams.
• Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn, adapt, and continuously improve.
• Demonstrated ability to execute efficiently and effectively.
Additional Pluses
• Experience partnering with Analytics Engineers using DBT and modern warehouse modeling practices.
• Familiarity with programmatic Power BI administration and automation using XMLA endpoints and/or PowerShell (e.g., dataset management, deployments, refresh, and metadata-driven workflows).
• Familiarity with Domain Driven Design concepts.
• Experience supporting both operational reporting and experimentation/measurement reporting.
Compensation & Benefits
• Competitive salary range of $100,000 - $140,000, plus bonus opportunities.
