In 1920, four visionary women with a passionate cause went door to door, asking support from the Jewish Community in Rochester to create a Jewish Home for the aging.
The Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS) was founded in 1960 as the North American Association of Jewish Homes and Housing for the Aging (NAJHHA). It was created and continues to function as the central coordinator for homes and residential facilities for Jewish elderly in North America.
1974 Supreme Court appoints JASA as the first social service agency in the State of New York to be a conservator for mentally impaired older adults
In 1975, internist and cardiologist Lawrence Feigenbaum, MD, along with Barbara W. Sklar planted the seed of an idea with colleagues and friends at Mount Zion Hospital.
1976 Home-Delivered Meals program established
1977 Joint Public Affairs Committee (JPAC) founded to give older adults a voice in community change and policy
1981 Legal Services for the Elderly in Queens (LSEQ) established
1982 Sundays at JASA established
In 1983, four of San Francisco’s most important foundations (The Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, the Koret Foundation, the Levi-Strauss Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation) provided planning funds for a comprehensive geriatrics program under the Mount Zion umbrella.
1983 (JASACare) Home Care program established
In 1985, Institute on Aging became a separate 501(c)(3) organization while maintaining its close ties to Mount Zion and the Jewish community.
In 1990, Mount Zion and UCSF solidified nearly 60 years of professional cooperation by merging.
1990 Community Guardian program established
1994 Institute for Senior Action (IFSA) advocacy training program established by JPAC
1997 Help Center established
2005 JASA is lead sponsor of the first NYC Elder Abuse Conference
