The YMCA of Great Grand Rapids utilizes a Membership By Design framework, which is a member involvement and community building model for YMCAs across the country. All staff membersfront-line, management, full- and part-timeand volunteers have a role to play in member engagement. These responsibilities can be broken into six steps:

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Swim Instructor is responsible for conducting swimming instruction using the National Aquatic YMCA Programs. The Swim Instructor will ensure a safe, fun area for children and adults to interact and enjoy. This position offers flexible hours.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Teaches aquatic skills
Follows prepared lesson plans
Maintains teaching equipment
Maintains supervision of participants
Distributes and collects program evaluations
Implements Character Development in all programs
Handles parent/member complaints
Maintains all areas in clean, presentable fashion
Maintains pool and deck equipment
Enforces safety standards
Follows emergency procedures
Ensures State of Michigans Department of Health requirements are met
Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
COMPENSATION
$15.50 - $19.38 ; Part-Time; Non-Exempt (up to 25hrs/week)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Six months to one year of recreation, lifeguard, swim instructor, or water park experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required. Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles. Ability to demonstrate aquatic skills. Ability to react quickly to emergency situations. At least sixteen years of age or older. YMCA experience preferred.

Swim Instructor Certification required
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for rescue (required)
YMCA Swim Instructor Certification, required within the first 60 days

Job Summary

Facilitate Red Cross ‘Learn to Swim' programs for members ages 6-21
As directed by the Aquatics Director, develop cooperative age-appropriate swimming pool activities
Ensure that activity plans are implemented as scheduled and that participants improve
Take initiative, provide problem solving, and respond appropriately, to participant situations in swimming pool areas
Ensure that all necessary reports are completed on a daily basis
Use behavior management strategies to defuse inappropriate behavior
Attend required department meetings and professional development trainings
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
At least 1-year experience as a pool lifeguard, instructor, or comparable
Demonstrated leadership experience in an educational, social service and/or youth development setting
Familiarity with principles of supervision, organization, and maintenance
Current Water Safety Certification from the American Red Cross required
Previous experience working with children required
First Aid and CPR Certification required

The Role at a Glance
The Agency Instructor I will perform training for various specialty, skilled and/or semi-skilled courses, specifically Confined Space Entry, within the Water & Wastewater program. They will perform online and/or classroom instruction, field-based skills training, and/or may provide technical assistance in a specialty area while using a variety of media to present course material. The instructor may assist in creating new content or updating existing curriculum content, when necessary, to meet the learner's needs. The instructor is expected to maintain their technical competence and skills and will report to the Training Coordinator/Manager.
The purpose of this position is to perform instruction in proper confined space entry procedures and serve as a subject matter expert regarding confined spaces. In addition to instruction, duties will include delivery, set-up, and maintaining the confined space entry trailer as well as all the safety equipment within the trailer.
Qualifications of the Role
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
Three years of hands-on experience in performing confined space entries.
Three years of experience in the operation of, maintenance, design, construction, or regulation of water utility systems.
Must have a valid Class “A” CDL or ability to obtain within 180 days of employment.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Delivers legendary service to all members, guests, and program participants. Under the direction of the Aquatic Leadership the Swim Instructor will maintain a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Complete all necessary paperwork and record keeping in a timely manner (i.e. attendance, progress tracker, certification of achievements, accident reports.)
Be prepared and relationship ready by having all equipment set up BEFORE class time begins and put away after class ends. Report any damage equipment.
Spend adequate time in the water to develop participants to their fullest potential and providing exceptional instruction.
Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
Maintain a positive and cooperative attitude when sharing site space, including maintaining an appropriate voice level and using space appropriately to class needs and site provisions.
Provide appropriate attention to class and participants and refrain from socializing with other personnel during class time.
Assist in leading new or inexperienced staff in teaching by allowing them to follow your class structure and advising them on best practices.
Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having and using prepared lesson plans.
Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
Attend all meetings and trainings as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
3+ months teaching and training in an aquatic environment.
Minimum of 16 years of age.
Current nationally recognized swim instructor certification. Y-USA Swim Instructor certification preferred.
Within 30 days of hire, complete all New Employee Orientation trainings.

Ability to work accurately at a fast pace.
Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness and heat.
Must have high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform job responsibilities.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
